Job Description

The Y, specifically the YMCA of Greater Seattle (YGS), is a community-focused nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting equity, social justice, and holistic development for people of all ages. Known for its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and removing systemic barriers, the Y actively cultivates an environment free from bias and injustice. Their work not only focuses on health, wellness, and recreation programs but also includes specialized outdoor leadership initiatives geared towards youth and community enrichment. With a strong mission of building a community where individuals, especially children and young adults, can realize their full potential in spirit, mind, and body, the YMCA of Greater Seattle is a critical social institution empowering diverse populations through respectful and culturally versatile programming.

This job opportunity is for the position of Resident Camp Cook at one of the Y's seasonal residential camp sites. Resident Camp Cooks work under the supervision of the Food Services Director and assist with all aspects of camp food services for both staff members and guests. This is a part-time, shift-based role with a starting wage ranging between $22.00 and $24.20 per hour. The Resident Camp Cook is an essential member of the kitchen team, contributing to the preparation, serving, and overall provision of nutritious and appetizing camp meals in a highly organized and hygienic setting.

In this role, individuals will receive on-the-job training specific to kitchen duties alongside other program team members. Responsibilities include food preparation, maintaining cleanliness of the kitchen area, dishwashing, recording temperature logs, ensuring food safety regulations are met, and interacting positively with campers, staff, food suppliers, and health officials. The Resident Camp Cook also plays a key role in maintaining security and cleanliness in the kitchen and may supervise food service personnel in the absence of the Food Services Director. This dynamic camp environment requires flexible availability, often including nights and weekend shifts to accommodate different group schedules.

Staff working with the Y benefit from various perks including access to a YMCA membership, mental health resources, paid time off accrued rapidly, and childcare discounts. Being part of the Y means contributing to a greater mission of equity, respect, responsibility, honesty, caring, and passion for excellence. The organization values diversity and ensures equitable treatment of all employees regardless of race, gender, religion, or other protected statuses. The Resident Camp Cook is not merely a food service role but a position that embraces the larger mission of community building, supporting youth development, and fostering a positive and inclusive camp culture. Overall, the Resident Camp Cook is vital in ensuring the successful delivery of meals that support the physical well-being of camp participants while upholding the Y's commitment to social justice and community care.
