The role of Cook within the DCH Health System Nutritional Services team is vital for maintaining these high standards. The Cook is responsible for preparing a wide variety of cooked and baked foods for patients and other customers, ensuring compliance with standardized recipes to achieve the required taste, appearance, and nutritional quality. This position requires hands-on involvement in the full scope of food service activities, including managing food requisitions, maintaining menus and recipes, and ensuring that all equipment and work areas are clean and sanitized. The Cook also supports superior customer service and must be proficient in the use and setup of various kitchen equipment such as grills, ovens, steam tables, mixers, and specialty station tools.

In addition to culinary skills, the Cook plays a key role in promoting and enforcing food safety programs such as the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HAACP) to maintain proper storage, temperature, and cleaning schedules. This position also demands flexibility, including the ability to work variable shifts and fulfill duties across culinary, service, and janitorial functions as needed. The Cook works in an environment that may be physically demanding and requires consistent attention to safety protocols to protect patients, visitors, and staff.

Furthermore, the position requires effective communication skills to understand and follow oral and written instructions accurately and to interact with a multidisciplinary team to ensure timely and efficient food service delivery. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • at least two years cooking experience preferred
  • ability to operate food service equipment such as fryers, choppers and steamers
  • compliant with food safety standards
  • able to read, write and communicate effectively in English
  • capable of following detailed oral and written instructions
  • must complete and maintain ServSafe certification
  • physical ability to stand, walk, kneel and lift up to 50 lbs
  • able to work in hot and cold environments
  • willingness to work variable shifts
  • maintain cleanliness and sanitation of work areas
  • adhere to all DCH Health System policies and behavioral standards

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • able to read and write English
  • able to understand and interpret detailed written and oral instructions
  • two years experience as a cook preferred
  • skilled in operating a variety of food service equipment including fryers, choppers and steamers
  • ServSafe class with a minimum score of 75% preferred but not required
  • able to speak and comprehend English
  • good communication skills
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices

Job Duties

  • Performs all duties of an assistant cook
  • promotes and coordinates standard and special set up and layout of buffets and food stations
  • manages requisitions for food and supplies, menu maintenance and recipe maintenance for specific food stations
  • proficient in use and set-up of all equipment related to food production and customer service
  • prepares and cooks a variety of foods following standardized recipes to meet taste, appearance and nutritional standards
  • adjusts recipes quickly and accurately using cooking principles and basic math skills
  • maintains work area and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition
  • promotes customer service through effective completion of assignments on schedule and time lines
  • understands and follows oral and written directions
  • enforces HAACP program including proper storage, temperature maintenance and cleaning schedules
  • performs duties of cook's assistant, server and janitor, including limited bakery and pastry tasks
  • reconciles food usage through administration and tracking of resources and systems
  • adheres to all DCH Health System and Nutritional Services policies and procedures
  • works variable shifts as required
  • maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards
  • performs compliance requirements from the employee handbook
  • creates positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers and colleagues
  • ensures safety of patients, visitors and employees
  • identifies and reduces unsafe practices and hazards
  • uses electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet
  • performs other assigned duties as needed
