The Cook position at the Tucson VA Medical Center involves independently preparing and cooking a wide variety of menu items including entrees, starches, vegetables, sauces or gravies, and dessert items, often coordinating multiple dishes with different cooking times and characteristics. The candidate will need to follow menus, production sheets, and recipes to ensure meals are prepared in the quantities required and meet specific dietary restrictions. This position requires knowledge of multiple cooking methods such as grilling, broiling, roasting, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, stewing, braising, and slicing to exact specifications. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for the preparation of fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables, desserts, sandwiches, and pureed foods while adhering strictly to food safety and sanitation protocols.

Working as a Cook at the Tucson VA Medical Center is a full-time, permanent position with a pay scale of WG 6, earning between $24.70 and $28.82 per hour. The work schedule varies between 5:00 AM and 6:30 PM from Sunday through Saturday, indicating flexibility and the need for adaptability to meet the demands of the kitchen's operation. The position is not eligible for telework or flexible schedules and requires physically demanding tasks such as continuous standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 40 lbs unassisted, and operating heavy kitchen equipment.   • Slices meat items by hand, confirming to specific size requirements or weight specifications
  • Prepares fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables
  • bakes frozen potatoes, pre-made cookie dough, and muffin batters
  • Prepares and heats convenience items, and prepares pureed foods and adjusts consistency with thickeners
  • Washes, peels, and cuts fruits and vegetables
  • assembles and mixes salad ingredients and dessert items, including gelatin molds and fruit crisps
  • Plans cooking processes to produce meals on time and at the proper temperature which may require coordination of cooking several items with different cooking times
  • Makes a variety of desserts such as cobblers, brownies, cookies, and pastries
  • Weighs, measures, and assembles ingredients for regular and modified diets
  • Operates a variety of kitchen equipment and follows appropriate safety procedures
  • Follows sanitary food handling procedures
  • Disassembles and reassembles equipment for cleaning
  • Cleans and sanitizes work areas, and performs deep cleaning tasks when needed
