The Cook role at Brighton Gardens of Winston-Salem is a vital position within the Dining Services team, responsible for maintaining the quality and safety of food preparation and service. Reporting directly to the Dining Services Coordinator, the cook ensures timely, accurate, and sanitary meal production in accordance with established recipes and food safety standards. This part-time position requires hands-on involvement in all aspects of kitchen operations, including food preparation, cooking, cleaning, and equipment maintenance. The cook also provides crucial coverage during any absence of the Dining Services Coordinator, demonstrating leadership and organizational skills to keep all dining activities running smoothly.

As a Cook, you will play a key role in delivering nutritious and delicious meals adapted to residents' dietary restrictions and preferences while supporting the mission and core values of Sunrise Senior Living. Your responsibilities include accurate food production record-keeping, using Sunrise-specific systems for order management, and ensuring all kitchen and storage areas adhere to cleanliness and safety protocols. Beyond food preparation, this position involves collaboration with the larger dining team, contributing to team goals, participation in community events, and ongoing training to maintain compliance with local health and safety regulations.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year job related experience including food preparation in a restaurant, hotel, or similar environment
  • CPR certificate and first aid certificate
  • ServSafe Manager certificate
  • Local Health Department Food Handler card
  • Ability to follow safety procedures including the use of personal protective equipment
  • Capable of performing cleaning and janitorial duties
  • Able to maintain equipment and report problems promptly
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and attend required trainings

Job Qualifications

  • One year job related experience including food preparation in a restaurant, hotel, or similar environment
  • High school diploma or GED
  • CPR certificate and first aid certificate
  • ServSafe Manager certificate
  • Local Health Department Food Handler card
  • Prior culinary apprenticeship or training a plus

Job Duties

  • Ensure high standards for food taste and quality are upheld at all times
  • Prepare and serve meals in a timely manner and in accordance with established standardized recipes and menus
  • Utilize production sheets to accurately record food production quantities and cooking, holding, and cooling temperatures
  • Prepare required dietary modifications as ordered
  • Use Sunrise systems per guidelines for order taking and meal delivery to ensure accuracy
  • Stock, rotate, date, and store product according to food safety standards and regulations
  • Maintain clean and organized kitchen, storage, and work areas
  • Complete assigned cleaning duties and ensure accuracy of daily and weekly cleaning logs
  • Maintain accurate equipment logs and report any issues promptly
  • Maintain all cooking equipment in a safe and working order and report any issues promptly
  • Comply with national/provincial regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety requirements and Risk Management programs and policies, adhere to safety rules and regulations, and practice safety procedures including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and Lockout Tagout procedures
  • Perform dishwashing tasks to properly wash and sanitize all dishes and china, silverware, glassware, utensils, and cookware
  • Operate dish machine(s) according to manufacturer instructions
  • Perform light janitorial duties, including sweeping work areas, sanitizing production areas, and emptying trash
  • Clean assigned kitchen equipment including stoves, ovens, fryers, microwaves, mixers, slicers, refrigerators, freezers, worktables, prep sinks, ice makers, coffee machines, hoods, and ventilation screens
  • Assist with service in the dining areas as needed
  • Participate and commit to working toward team goals
  • Demonstrate Team Member Credo in daily interactions
  • Commit to serving residents and guests through Principles of Service
  • Contribute to overall engagement programs for both residents and team members
  • Attend meetings such as Town Hall, Department Team, Cross Over, and others as directed
  • Maintain compliance in assigned required training and all training required by state/province or regulating authorities
  • Perform other duties as assigned
