The institution offers a wide range of benefits and perks to qualifying staff, promoting a comprehensive and supportive work environment that includes medical, dental, and vision plans, holiday and sick leave, education discounts, retirement contributions, life insurance, career training opportunities, and various employee discounts. This particular position is for a Cook within the NUTRI Cafeteria department at UAMS. The role involves collaborating with other cooks and food preparation technicians under the direction of a supervisor to requisition, prepare, season, and cook a broad range of foods, including soups, salads, bakery items, and entrees for patients, employees, or patrons. The cook position is essential in maintaining food quality, hygiene, and safety standards in a busy medical facility environment. This role demands constant physical activity and the ability to handle food preparation tasks that meet various dietary and nutritional restrictions. The position is regular and requires flexibility in working rotating weekends and holidays, including during inclement weather conditions.
The Cook is responsible for cleaning, cutting, and cooking food items according to the menu and portion requirements. Additionally, the cook must clean and inspect kitchen equipment and work areas to ensure cleanliness and proper operation. Serving food to patients, employees, and patrons is also part of the core responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned as needed, requiring adaptability and teamwork. The job involves frequent physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, crawling, crouching, kneeling, stooping, reaching overhead, and using hands. It requires lifting and pushing/pulling weights between 26 to 50 pounds. The working environment is inside a medical facility with a loud noise level and includes hazards such as biological agents, fumes, gases, odors, sharp tools, and chemicals.
Candidates should possess a high school diploma or GED with at least one year of experience in institutional or commercial cooking. The ability to work during inclement weather and rotating weekends and holidays is required. Preferred qualifications include formal culinary education and ServSafe certification. The salary for the position is commensurate with education and experience. The University provides a supportive application process with opportunities to save draft applications and a clear closing date for the position. This role is benefits eligible and subject to standard pre-employment screening, including criminal background checks, drug testing, and education verification. UAMS values a safe, diverse, and engaging work environment and offers comprehensive benefits to its employees.
