Job Description
The Salvation Army, an international movement and evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, is dedicated to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and meeting human needs without discrimination. Founded on the principles of the Bible and motivated by the love of God, this organization provides a broad range of services aimed at spiritual regeneration and community support. The Everett Corps, a local branch of The Salvation Army, operates a shelter that provides critical services to vulnerable populations, including meal provision programs. The Salvation Army is known for its strong commitment to faith-based community service and offers a structured, supportive working environment dedicated to making positive social impacts.
This full-time, non-exempt Cook position at The Salvation Army shelter in Everett, Washington, offers an hourly wage of $21.30, payable bi-weekly. Reporting directly to the Corps Officers, the Cook plays a crucial role in maintaining the shelter's meal program by planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals. This role requires managing food resources that include donated items, commodities, and purchased goods. The position demands thorough coordination and supervision of kitchen volunteers, ensuring a clean, safe, and well-organized kitchen that complies with Public Health Department regulations.
Responsibilities include meal planning with cost-effective strategies, maintaining food safety through proper storage and kitchen sanitation, and collaborating with the Shelter Supervisor and Social Services Director to meet the nutritional needs of the shelter community. The Cook also handles purchasing of food, planning special event menus such as Thanksgiving and Mother’s Day, and managing grab-and-go food items for shelter residents. This position requires a candidate who can work independently with sound judgment, possess a current food handler's certificate, and have experience in food service, including menu planning and cost management.
Physically, the role requires standing and walking for extended periods and the ability to lift, push, or pull items weighing up to 45 pounds, as well as the capacity to work in warmer-than-average kitchen environments. Effective communication skills are essential for coordinating efforts with team members and volunteers. While primarily based indoors in a controlled environment, occasional outdoor duties are expected, requiring appropriate attire according to weather conditions.
The Salvation Army offers a comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, medical, vision, and dental insurance. Health insurance options include Kaiser HMO and Anthem EPO/PPO plans, with voluntary coverage extensions available. Additional benefits include employer-paid life insurance, voluntary supplemental life and disability plans, retirement plans with an employer-funded Money Purchase Pension plan, and parental leave with 40 hours of paid leave for qualifying events. Employees also benefit from a supportive workplace culture aligned with the organization’s Christian mission, equal opportunity employment policies, and accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
Working at The Salvation Army means joining an employer with a strong ethical and spiritual foundation, committed to improving the lives of those in need through compassionate service and practical support. Individuals hired for this Cook position will contribute directly to the well-being of shelter residents, making a meaningful and tangible impact in their community.
