Job Description
The Bowling Center at Travis Air Force Base, CA, is a renowned establishment operating under the Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) designation, serving as a key recreational and morale facility for the Air Force and Space Force communities. Travis Air Force Base is well-known for its diverse amenities and support services, including a Base Exchange (BX), gym, outdoor recreation, library, marina, golf course, and arts & crafts center. These facilities collectively create a vibrant and inclusive environment aimed at enhancing the quality of life for military personnel, their families, and civilian employees. The Bowling Center itself provides a friendly and engaging atmosphere where members of the military community can unwind, socialize, and enjoy recreational activities that foster camaraderie and promote wellness.
The role available at this establishment is a Non-appropriated Fund Cooking position, with opportunities for intermittent work schedules offering up to 40 hours per week. The pay range for this position stands between $23.46 and $24.43 per hour, classified under the NA 4 pay scale with no promotion potential. This position emphasizes preparing and cooking simple food items, mainly requiring limited processing skills such as cooking pancakes, sausage, eggs, hamburgers, and vegetables. The candidate will be responsible for preparing hot cereals, broiled meats, concentrated or dehydrated soups, sauces, gravies, and cold sandwich fillings, as well as convenience items like frozen hash browns, fish fillets, chicken nuggets, and pizza.
The role involves considerable physical effort, frequently lifting or moving objects up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally handling heavier items with assistance. This job requires familiarity with safe cooking practices, food handling procedures, and kitchen equipment maintenance, contributing directly to the efficiency and safety of food service operations within a military recreational setting. Alongside cooking duties, responsibilities include preparation tasks such as peeling, chopping, grinding, cutting, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, and breading ingredients. Ensuring correct proportions, seasoning, and adherence to recipes will be critical in delivering quality meal options. The candidate will also manage the setup and replenishment of the salad bar, appropriate handling and storage of leftovers, and regular kitchen cleaning duties.
Eligibility for this position extends to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S., with an emphasis on meeting suitability and fitness background requirements. This role is open to the public and encourages applicants who possess experience in food preparation within grills, snack bars, restaurants, clubs, or related food service environments. Knowledge of food characteristics, cooking techniques, and equipment operation is essential, complemented by the ability to follow written and oral instructions and perform basic arithmetic needed for measurements and portion control.
Candidates must complete a background investigation and pre-employment physical examination to ensure fitness for this physically demanding role. Applicants should be prepared to provide necessary supporting documentation, including resumes and proof of eligibility, by the closing date of June 29, 2026. The position does not offer telework options, relocation expenses, or require travel. It is a permanent appointment under the competitive service with no supervisory responsibilities and no security clearance requirements. The Bowling Center at Travis Air Force Base prioritizes candidate commitment to enhancing government efficiency, upholding American values, and contributing positively to the community. Offering the chance to work within a vibrant military environment with access to exclusive base facilities, this role is ideal for individuals passionate about food preparation and dedicated to serving the morale and welfare needs of Air Force and Space Force members.
