Job Description

The Center for Human Development (CHD) is a well-established nonprofit organization committed to providing high-quality, community-oriented human services. Operating in Massachusetts, CHD's mission focuses on promoting, enhancing, and protecting the dignity and welfare of people in need. As a multicultural, multilingual, and inclusive organization, CHD reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. With a strong emphasis on inclusion and cultural competence, CHD is recognized for its dedication to supporting various populations, including vulnerable youth, families, older adults, and individuals with disabilities. Among its many programs, CHD offers Juvenile Justice Programming in Springfield and Westfield, Massachusetts, servicing adolescents committed to the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services (DYS). These programs aim to help young men aged 12 to 21 successfully transition back to their home communities by providing intensive therapeutic and educational services tailored to each participant's needs.

Within the Juvenile Justice Programming, CHD seeks to hire dedicated Cooks to join their team. This role is integral to supporting the facility's operations by ensuring that nutritious, appetizing, and compliant meals are prepared for the residents. The job involves adhering to strict nutritional guidelines set by the Bureau of Nutrition while maintaining a clean and safe kitchen and dining environment. Cooks in this position not only prepare daily meals and snacks but also engage in vocational training efforts, working collaboratively with youth to help develop practical culinary skills as part of their rehabilitation and life skills development. This hands-on approach contributes to the overall rehabilitation goals of the Juvenile Justice Program by offering opportunities for learning and growth in a structured, supportive setting.

As a Cook at CHD's Juvenile Justice facilities, the successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Kitchen Manager, participating fully in meal preparation and kitchen maintenance. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal food safety regulations and maintaining a secure, hygienic workspace. Beyond the culinary tasks, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference by contributing to the vocational and personal development of young adults facing challenging circumstances. The hourly wage for this position is competitive at $20.00, complemented by an attractive benefits package. The employment type emphasizes flexibility, as working various shifts including nights and weekends may be required.

This position is ideal for individuals who possess not only cooking skills but also qualities such as patience, compassion, and the ability to work independently and within a team setting. The role demands a high level of energy, professionalism, and dedication to the mission of CHD. Experience working with adolescents, particularly those involved in the juvenile justice system, is preferred but not mandatory. The organization places great importance on fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment where employees can thrive and contribute to impactful community services.

Candidates interested in this rewarding Cook opportunity will find themselves part of an organization that values diversity, promotes inclusion as a daily practice, and provides meaningful benefits to both employees and the populations served. This is an excellent employment prospect for culinary professionals looking to make a difference while advancing their career in a community-focused setting. CHD encourages qualified individuals to apply and join their committed team, where care genuinely finds a way.
