Job Description

University of Utah Health is currently seeking a dedicated Cook to join the team at the Kem and Carolyn Gardner Mental Health Crisis Care Center located in South Salt Lake, Utah. This full-time, on-site position offers a variable shift schedule including Wednesdays through Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Cook role is patient-focused but non-clinical and responsible for preparing a variety of food service items by following established hospital recipes and procedures. This role supports the overall operations of hospital food services by ensuring timely and quality preparation of meals that meet dietary needs in a hospital environment.

The Cook will be responsible for performing both basic and advanced food preparation tasks including baking, roasting, stewing, frying, steaming, and other cooking methods, all aligned with strict dietary requirements and hospital standards. The role may include leading and overseeing other cooks, ensuring they adhere to cooking procedures and safety standards. Attention to quality control, portion sizes, sanitation, and inventory management is essential. This position involves the operation of various kitchen equipment like slicers, steamers, fryers, and blenders, necessitating knowledge of proper techniques and safety practices. In addition to food preparation, the Cook supports catering events and helps maintain a clean and orderly kitchen environment that complies with health codes at all times.

Job Requirements

  • Must have two years of institutional cooking experience or equivalent
  • must possess current Utah Food Handler Permit or current Food Protection Manager certification accredited by ANSI
  • must be able to work the variable shift schedule including weekends
  • must be able to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds
  • must be able to comply with hospital sanitation and food safety regulations
  • must demonstrate good human relations and communication skills
  • must have computer literacy
  • must be able to work on-site in South Salt Lake, UT
  • must be prepared to provide five professional references if hired

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of institutional cooking experience, or the equivalency

Job Duties

  • Bakes, roasts, stews, fries, steam-cooks, or otherwise prepares food products for cooking by following instructions and standard hospital recipes
  • utilizes knowledge of cooking methods and preparation time requirements to ensure that adequate amounts of properly prepared foods are provided in a timely fashion
  • uses cooking knowledge and experience to adjust recipes for factors such as altitude, special diet orders, etc
  • adheres to manufacturer instructions and standard hospital kitchen procedures when operating machinery and equipment used in cooking including slicers, choppers, steamers, broilers, griddles, fryers, braziers, blenders, microwaves, etc
  • weighs cooking products, as required, ensuring proper portion delivery
  • cleans the work area, refrigerators, stoves, ovens, storeroom, and utensils in order to comply with hospital, county and state sanitation requirements
  • performs quality checks for taste and appearance of finished food products
