Job Description
The hiring establishment for this position is SUN Behavioral Health, a well-regarded healthcare provider known for its commitment to patient-centered care, safety, and quality in a behavioral health setting. SUN Behavioral Health operates in the specialized field of behavioral health hospital services, providing compassionate and professional care to patients with a wide range of mental health needs. Their facility is recognized for fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, integrity, and compassion, all aimed at optimizing patient outcomes while supporting a collaborative work environment for staff. The organization delivers healthcare services with a strong emphasis on infection control, patient safety, and compliance with healthcare regulations, making it a trusted place for both patients and healthcare professionals. This position is a full-time role focused on dietary services, particularly food preparation and kitchen management within a hospital environment.
The role of the Cook at SUN Behavioral Health is vital as it directly impacts patient nutrition, satisfaction, and wellness. Reporting to the Director of Dietary Services, the Cook is responsible for preparing, seasoning, and cooking food for patients, staff, and visitors. This includes strictly following planned menus, ensuring food quality, taste, appearance, and dietary modifications as needed in consultation with dietitians. The Cook oversees inventory control, orders necessary food supplies, and works closely with the supervisor to manage leftovers and maintain efficient kitchen operations. A key aspect of this position is adhering to infection control and safety standards, which is crucial in a hospital setting to prevent contamination and protect vulnerable patient populations.
In addition to practical culinary skills such as cooking meats, fish, and poultry using various methods (baking, roasting, broiling, steaming), mixing ingredients to approved recipes, and testing for proper cooking temperatures and seasoning, the Cook also supervises food service workers in food preparation. This supervisory element requires leadership abilities and teamwork skills. The Cook contributes to maintaining an organized, clean kitchen environment following all hygiene guidelines, including serving patients when needed. Safety and teamwork are emphasized, with expectations to participate in safety training, support quality initiatives, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, patients, and healthcare professionals. Demonstrating integrity, the Cook adheres to hospital policies, confidentiality standards, and professional conduct, contributing to a trustworthy and efficient dietary service.
The position demands accountability, compassion, and a dedication to go above and beyond to meet patient needs while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity. Educational requirements include a high school diploma or GED, CPR certification, de-escalation technique certification specific to the hospital, and a current ServSafe certificate obtained within three months of hire. Experience requirements highlight the importance of previous food service or restaurant experience, preferably with direct exposure to hospital or behavioral health dietary settings. Overall, this role is integral for ensuring the delivery of safe, nutritious, and appealing meals that support patient healing and satisfaction in a behavioral health hospital environment.
