Job Description
The Department of the Navy (DON) is a distinguished federal agency dedicated to maintaining the defense and security of the United States through naval operations and support services. As part of the federal government, the DON provides its employees with stability, comprehensive benefits, and the unique opportunity to contribute to essential governmental functions that safeguard the nation's interests. The DON's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Department plays a critical role in supporting the wellbeing and morale of military personnel, civilians, and their families by offering various recreational, leisure, and food services. The MWR Department is committed to delivering quality services that enhance the daily lives of its patrons and foster a supportive and engaging community environment.
This specific position within the MWR Department is a Regular Full Time role focused on food preparation and cooking duties. The role is crucial as it involves preparing and cooking a variety of menu items including regular and special entrees, grill items, desserts, and convenience foods such as frozen hash browns, fish fillets, and chicken nuggets. The employee will perform a full range of simple cooking tasks requiring little to no processing, such as preparing pancakes, sausages, eggs, hamburgers, and fresh or canned vegetables, and will utilize standardized recipes to ensure consistency and quality. Additional duties include broiling meats, preparing concentrated or dehydrated soups, sauces, gravies, and making cold sandwich fillings. This position may also involve baking and preparing pizzas.
The individual in this position will be responsible for food preparation tasks such as peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, and breading. Strict adherence to portion controls by weighing, measuring, and dispensing foods accurately is required to maintain quality and cost control. Responsibilities extend to setting up and replenishing the salad bar, properly covering, dating, and storing leftovers according to established food safety procedures, and performing cleaning and maintenance of kitchen equipment and work areas to comply with sanitation standards. Maintaining accurate food inventories and rotating stock items to prevent spoilage is an essential part of this role.
Candidates must comply with federal employment suitability requirements including background investigations utilizing fingerprint identification and background inquiry forms, and E-Verify employment verification checks. The role requires the ability to lift and carry loads frequently up to 40 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds. Flexibility to work irregular hours including early shifts, late shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed is essential. A valid state driver’s license is required to operate motor vehicles in connection with some job duties.
The role offers meaningful employment in a federal setting with a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, life insurance, long-term disability, retirement plans, 401(k) savings plan, tuition reimbursement, and paid leave. The job supports a quality work-life balance and welcomes individuals passionate about serving in the federal government to join the team. This position emphasizes equal opportunity employment and provides reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities. By joining the Department of the Navy's MWR team, employees contribute to a mission that promotes morale and welfare among service members and civilians alike, delivering essential services that impact lives positively on a daily basis.
