Job Description
The Maryland Food Bank (MFB) is a leading nonprofit, anti-hunger organization dedicated to feeding people, strengthening communities, and ending hunger for more Marylanders. Founded with the mission to expand access to nutritious food and tackle the root causes of hunger, MFB operates a comprehensive statewide network of community-based organizations that distribute food from Maryland’s western mountains to the Eastern Shore. Last year alone, the Maryland Food Bank distributed enough food to provide over 41 million meals, roughly 114,000 meals daily, supporting vulnerable populations including children, seniors, veterans, and working families. The organization's commitment extends beyond food distribution by offering job training programs, access to supportive services and benefits, and advocating for systemic changes in laws, policies, and practices that contribute to food insecurity affecting over one in three Marylanders.
As part of its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, MFB values the contributions of all employees and strives to create a workplace culture where team members can develop and succeed to their fullest potential. The FoodWorks Temporary Cook position plays a vital role within MFB’s FoodWorks program by preparing meals safely and efficiently to meet the needs of Marylanders who rely on the food bank’s services. This temporary role involves supporting kitchen operations, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations, maintaining sanitation standards, and assisting with logistical tasks related to meal preparation and distribution. The cook will prepare entrees and menu items following established recipes, operate and maintain kitchen equipment, and uphold high standards of food storage and inventory management. With shifts that rotate monthly between 6am - 2:30pm and 7:30am - 4pm, the position requires flexibility to work between 6am and 5pm, reflecting the dynamic environment of food production and delivery.
The role demands physical stamina as it is performed in a commercial kitchen and warehouse with variable temperatures and noise levels. Candidates need to be able to stand for most of the day, perform frequent bending and lifting, and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds. Safety is paramount, as employees work alongside moving equipment including forklifts and pallet jacks and may enter refrigerated areas with temperatures as low as -5°F. Compensation for this temporary position is $20.00 per hour.
Safety, ethical practices, and professionalism are underscored through mandatory background checks and drug screenings including marijuana. The Maryland Food Bank offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to alleviating hunger and supporting community wellbeing, tailored for individuals passionate about food service, safety, and social impact within an inclusive and supportive environment.
