The Cook position at CGS is a vital role that contributes to the organization's mission by assisting the Lead Cook in coordinating meal preparations and managing kitchen and cafeteria activities. This role is based at the Gulfport Job Corps Center, which is part of the United States Department of Labor’s largest career technical training and education program. The Cook supports the preparation of nutritious meals that help young people build successful careers in fast-growing industries, embodying the commitment of Job Corps to youth development.

The position involves evening, weekend, and holiday shifts, reflecting the commitment to providing consistent food service. The Cook will be responsible for preparing vegetables, meats, and baking items, ensuring meals comply with established food safety standards. Additional duties include maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and food service areas, preparing desserts, and assisting with the storage and accountability of food supplies. Another critical responsibility is supervising the work-based learning program, which develops students' employability and social skills within the food service environment.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • training in food preparation and one year experience
  • ability to obtain a Food Handler’s certificate within 30 days of employment
  • successful pass of background check and drug test
  • ability to obtain and maintain valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record

Job Duties

  • Prepare vegetables by washing, peeling, coring, grinding, shredding, or chopping for use in entrees
  • prepare meats for cooking by washing, trimming, boning, cutting, cubing, or forming into patties or loaves
  • cook or bake items which require minimum preparation
  • help cook and serve meals, ensuring that prepared foods are held and served at proper temperatures and all left over foods are properly chilled and stored
  • keep food service area, tables, floors, and equipment clean and sanitary
  • prepare desserts as needed
  • assist with the appropriate storage of dry goods and freezer items
  • maintain accountability of students and property
  • adhere to safety practices and OSHA standards
  • help supervise work-based learning program to include development of students' employability, social skills and Career Success Standards while in the Food Service area
