The Cook position at Banner Health, based in Phoenix, Arizona, within the Culinary & Nutrition department, is a critical role that supports the hospital's daily operations by preparing high-quality food items in accordance with standardized recipes. This full-time role primarily involves day shifts, Monday through Friday, with rotating weekends, and shift hours typically from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The cook is responsible for following production sheets, catering requests, and prep sheets to ensure that all food is prepared accurately and in a timely manner. The position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where teamwork and attention to detail are essential.
As part of the Culinary & Nutrition team, the Cook contributes directly to patient satisfaction by maintaining strict sanitary standards, managing food stocks, and operating various kitchen equipment. The role involves preparing both hot and cold food items, working in retail grill areas, cooking breakfast items, and adhering to food safety regulations. The Cook also monitors food and equipment temperatures, reports any issues, and assists with the efficient operation of the kitchen during their shift. This position requires at least one year of experience in institutional food production and the ability to learn and follow established policies, safety requirements, and cleaning schedules. The role demands strong interpersonal skills and the capability to perform under limited time constraints, ensuring that all food service standards are met for both patients and staff within the hospital environment.

Job Requirements
- At least one year of experience in institutional food production
- Ability to learn and follow established policies and procedures
- Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to perform simple math calculations
- Ability to learn food handling regulations and obtain food handler's card within 30 days of hire (for Banner Staffing Services team members)
- Must be 18 years or older to comply with Fair Labor Standards Act
- Ability to use kitchen equipment including stoves, ovens, steam-jacketed kettles, tilt skillet, broiler, steam table, grill, deep fryer, slicer, Buffalo Chopper, mixer, food carts, dish racks, cleaning equipment, and handling hazardous chemicals safely
- For employees at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital and Olive Branch Senior Center, possession and maintenance of Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Must sign Arizona Criminal History Affidavit upon hire
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent working knowledge
- One or more years of work experience in production cooking
- Ability to learn and follow established policies and procedures
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to perform simple math calculations
- Ability to learn food handling regulations and pass required certification tests
- Ability to follow production and cleaning schedules
- Ability to use chemicals safely
- Ability to read thermometers and follow safety requirements
Job Duties
- Prepares and cooks hot and cold food items using standardized recipes and calculates production quantities based on production forecast, tally sheets and catering orders
- May be assigned to work in the retail cafe grill area and/or cook breakfast items
- Records over production and run outs, writes directions and calculates production quantities
- Checks and logs food and equipment temperatures and reports any problems to the supervisor
- Maintains par levels of food and supplies in assigned areas, orders and/or restocks items in accordance with established routines, rotates food stocks, checks freshness dates
- Keeps assigned work areas clean and in an orderly manner
- Assists other kitchen and dietary staff as needed and assigned, may oversee the scheduled shift for efficiency
