The position of Cook at The Salvation Army Seattle White Center is a full-time, regular, and non-exempt role that supports the core mission by ensuring the planning, preparation, and serving of nutritious meals. Reporting directly to the Corps Officers and Operations Manager, the Cook plays a crucial role in the community programming aspect by preparing food for the corps as well as for community center events and services. The role involves menu planning that accommodates donated food, commodities, or purchases aligned with cost controls and budgeting responsibilities. This position requires hands-on cooking skills integrated with managerial tasks, including supervising kitchen employees and senior volunteers, overseeing compliance with Public Health Department regulations, and maintaining kitchen safety and cleanliness. The Cook will also collaborate with the Senior Center Director to plan meals for special events and monthly menus, as well as coordinate with the Social Services Director to utilize food supplies effectively for community programs.
The Cook should have experience in menu planning, purchasing, and food service, along with the ability to work independently and exercise good judgment. Current certification as a food handler and a valid in-state driver’s license with the ability to pass the organization's in-house driving assessment and motor vehicle record check are required. The individual must also carry personal auto insurance if using a personal vehicle for business purposes. This position involves physical demands such as standing and walking for extended periods, ensuring dexterity in hands and fingers, the ability to withstand warm kitchen environments, adequate hearing, and English reading comprehension. Job Requirements
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
- must be able to grasp and have full range of motion in fingers and hands
- must have the ability to withstand warmer than average temperatures
- must have the ability to read and comprehend the English language
- must have 50% hearing capabilities
Job Qualifications
- An understanding and acceptance of The Salvation Army's mission, philosophy and practices
- experience as a cook, in menu planning, purchasing, and food service
- ability to accurately figure costs of meals
- ability to work independently with good judgment
- current food handlers certificate
- a valid, in-state license and ability to pass The Salvation Army’s in-house driving test and MVR check
- if an employee owns his/her own vehicle, must possess current auto insurance for instances in which a personal vehicle is used on TSA time and/or business
Job Duties
- Plan nutritious meals using food that is donated, commodities or purchased
- handle the purchasing of food as needed
- process paperwork necessary to purchase items through the bookkeeping department
- supervise senior volunteers as kitchen helpers and servers
- supervise kitchen employees
- oversee the cleaning of the kitchen to be sure that Public Health Department regulations are followed
- see that the kitchen is maintained in a safe manner
- oversee the proper storage of food and supplies
- work with Senior Center Director to plan meals for special events and monthly menus
- work with Social Services Director to determine what product may be used for program
- responsible for Homework Center snack and special Corps functions
- perform any other duties related to the running of the meal program that may be assigned
