Job Description

This position is offered by a well-established healthcare facility specializing in providing nutritional and dietary services to residents in a hospital or nursing care setting. As part of their commitment to quality care, the facility emphasizes maintaining high standards in food preparation and service to support the overall wellbeing of its residents. The institution is dedicated to following federal, state, and local health regulations, along with its own strict policies and procedures to ensure safety and satisfaction in their food service department.

The role in question is for a Cook who will play an integral part in the daily food preparation process within the food services department. This position requires the cook to utilize their culinary skills to prepare meals that meet the planned menu specifications and adhere strictly to the dietary restrictions and needs of residents. The cook works closely with the Head Cook and Director of Food Services to coordinate meal services efficiently and to uphold the quality and consistency of food provided.

In addition to cooking, the position encompasses administrative responsibilities such as reviewing menus, inspecting diet trays for accuracy, handling diet changes, completing reports, and coordinating food service activities with other departments. The cook also assumes accountability for food safety, sanitation, and ensuring all equipment and utensils are properly used and maintained. Moreover, engaging in regular training and development activities is expected to enhance job performance and meet regulatory compliance.

This role not only involves food preparation but also significant interaction with residents, staff, and visitors, necessitating excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and sensitivity to residents' rights and preferences. The cook must foster a calm and welcoming atmosphere while complying with infection control and safety regulations. The working environment includes temperature fluctuations, dynamic tasks, and exposure to hazards such as infectious waste and chemical substances, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.

Education requirements include a minimum of completion of the eighth grade, with preference given to those who have at least one year of food service experience in a supervisory or cooking role within a medical facility, although this is not mandatory. The candidate must be capable of cooking large quantities of food, have leadership qualities, and be adept at independent decision-making. They must maintain an 'Eligible' status under the ACHA Background Screening and demonstrate proficiency in English.

Physical demands entail the ability to stand and move intermittently throughout the workday, perform lifting up to 35 pounds and carrying it over distances, tasting and smelling food for quality control, and engaging in verbal and written communication effectively. Candidates must meet general health requirements and be able to manage the mental and emotional demands of the job.

This is a critical position that ensures residents receive nutritious, safe, and appropriately prepared meals, contributing directly to their health and quality of life within the facility.
