Job Description

Banner Health is a prominent healthcare organization committed to providing comprehensive health services that improve the quality of life for individuals and communities. With a robust presence primarily in the Southwest United States, Banner Health operates numerous hospitals and clinics, delivering exceptional patient care with a mission to make a positive difference in people’s lives. The organization fosters a supportive and innovative environment for its workforce, emphasizing both quality healthcare delivery and employee fulfillment. Known for its dedication to cutting-edge medical standards and a patient-first philosophy, Banner Health continuously seeks passionate and skilled individuals to join its team. As a Cook at Banner Health, specifically located in Glendale, Arizona, you will be an integral part of the Facilities, Environmental Services, and Culinary department, contributing directly to producing nutritious and delicious meals essential to patient well-being and satisfaction.

The Cook role involves preparing fresh hot foods for both production and retail services, including patient meals, retail dining areas, and special events. This position demands efficiency and adaptability in a fast-paced environment often characterized by high volume and short order cook experience. The Cook will collaborate with kitchen teams to handle various responsibilities such as dishwashing, food preparation, unboxing foods and supplies, managing inventory, and restocking shelves while maintaining exceptional customer service standards. This position offers varied work shifts primarily from 7 am to 3:30 pm with every other weekend off and requires weekend and holiday rotations, with a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential when applicable.

The Cook is responsible for planning daily food production according to production sheets, cafe menus, catering requests, and other approved sources. This role requires careful adherence to standardized recipes, proper adjustment of recipe quantities for yield accuracy, and proactive communication with supervisors regarding any production issues. The position demands strategic planning of food production timing and quantities to meet daily orders and menu requirements effectively. The Cook must efficiently manage food waste, maintain accurate records of shortages and surpluses, closely monitor food and equipment temperatures for safety compliance, and ensure the cleanliness and orderly condition of assigned work areas.

An essential aspect of this role includes maintaining par levels of food and supplies, ordering and restocking items as per established routines, rotating stocks for freshness, and managing equipment functionality by reporting repair needs promptly. Additionally, the Cook may be tasked with receiving deliveries, quality assurance in food production, and occasionally providing leadership and training to other kitchen staff members. This position supports inter-departmental responsibilities and, at times, direct interaction with customers in cafe or catering settings.

Candidates must possess at least a high school diploma or GED and ideally have two or more years of relevant institutional food production experience. Familiarity with cooking principles, menu substitutions, and specialized diets is crucial for success. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate competency with commercial kitchen equipment and a strong ability to follow established safety and food handling protocols. Effective communication skills and the capacity to perform basic math calculations related to recipe adjustments and food quantities are also essential. The role requires certification through food handler’s card within 30 days of hire for Banner Staffing Services team members, except those based in Tucson and Colorado. Additionally, employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital need to obtain and maintain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card. Banner Health values diversity and supports a drug-free work environment, prioritizing the privacy and safety of all employees.
