The Cook 1 position at Bellevue College Food Services is a full-time, 11-month cyclical role pivotal to the efficient operation of the college’s dining services. Reporting to the Retail/Food Service Supervisor and working under the leadership guidance of a Cook 2, the Cook 1 is responsible for performing skilled cooking and food preparation tasks ensuring that food is prepared and ready to meet the daily service demands as well as future meal needs. This role is integral to maintaining high standards of food quality, safety, and customer satisfaction across multiple food service venues including the main cafeteria, coffee shops, and the Pizza Cafe within student housing. Beyond individual food preparation, the Cook 1 plays a supervisory role in overseeing student workers, assigning tasks, providing necessary training and instruction, and reviewing their work to ensure operational excellence and compliance with safety standards. The position requires proficiency in preparing a variety of food items including salads, desserts, beverages, quick breads, vegetables, and salad bar selections, along with the operation of kitchen equipment such as mixers, ovens, grills, fryers, steam kettles, and slicers.

The Cook 1 actively participates in both daily kitchen maintenance and larger-scale food preparation, including catering events, where they assist with food preparation, setup, and coordination to ensure successful service. This position demands a strong commitment to sanitation and safety regulations, requiring leadership in cleaning and maintaining kitchen areas. The candidate must demonstrate effective communication and customer service skills, adapting recipes for volume and service needs as directed. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education/experience
  • one year of cooking experience in a large-scale food service or culinary operation
  • knowledge of food values and nutrition, personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions
  • knowledge of proper care and use of kitchen utensils and equipment
  • demonstrated effective communication skills and ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • demonstrated effective customer service skills when working with employees, students, and visitors
  • demonstrated ability to work on several projects simultaneously
  • must obtain a King County Food Handler's Permit within 14 days of hire
  • experience working with diverse colleagues and students in a collaborative and inclusive environment

Job Duties

  • Perform skilled cooking and food preparation
  • participate in large-scale food preparation and service during assigned shifts
  • prepare food items according to standard menus, recipes, and verbal instructions
  • operate kitchen equipment such as mixers, ovens, choppers, shredders, steamers, grills, grinders, steam kettles, fryers, and meat/cheese slicers
  • lead and participate in cleaning kitchen areas and equipment ensuring sanitation and safety standards
  • supervise and train student workers
  • adjust recipes based on volume and service needs
  • lead and participate in proper storage, rotation, and utilization of leftovers and ingredients
  • provide effective customer service to students, employees, and visitors
  • assist with food preparation and setup of catering events
  • communicate and work with the Catering Supervisor regarding event details
