The Cook position at Houston Methodist is a critical role within the Food and Nutrition Services department. This role involves preparing and assembling high-quality food service items for patients, staff, and visitors in a high-volume healthcare setting. The Cook is responsible for the production of both hot and cold food items, including meats, vegetables, soups, and sauces. The job requires seasoning, cooking, garnishing, and packaging foods following set recipes and health and safety standards. The position mandates adherence to Houston Methodist’s standards of appearance and compliance with all federal, state, and local food safety regulations, including the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines.

Working as a Cook at Houston Methodist also involves communication and collaboration with peers, senior cooks, catering staff, and management to ensure efficient food preparation and quality service. The role requires monitoring storage conditions, managing food rotation and expiration dates, and maintaining sanitation standards to ensure patient safety. The Cook must actively participate in departmental initiatives focused on employee engagement and service quality. This position may also require occasional assistance in other food and nutrition service roles to support the department’s operations.

Candidates for this role are expected to hold a Food Handlers Permit accredited by either the Texas Department of State Health Services or the American National Standards Institute. A minimum of one year’s experience in food service or cooking is preferred, along with a high school diploma or equivalent. Skills necessary for the Cook position include proficiency in food safety practices, the ability to communicate effectively in English, knowledge of kitchen equipment and sanitation principles, and the ability to prepare food for various dining settings including buffet and plated meals.

Job Requirements
