Job Description
RWJUH Rahway Hospital is a prominent healthcare institution affiliated with the RWJBarnabas Health system, one of the leading academic health systems in New Jersey. RWJBarnabas Health is dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centered academic medicine in a compassionate and equitable manner. With a focus on innovative strategies in healthcare, education, and research, RWJUH Rahway Hospital plays a crucial role in advancing health outcomes not only through clinical care but also by addressing social determinants of health. The hospital prides itself on its commitment to creating and sustaining healthier communities across New Jersey, providing excellent medical services while fostering a supportive and enriching work environment for its employees. The hospital is known for embracing cutting-edge medical technologies and comprehensive patient care programs that contribute to its reputation as a trusted healthcare provider in the region.
The role of Cook at RWJUH Rahway Hospital is integral to supporting the hospital’s mission by ensuring that nutritious, high-quality meals are prepared for patients, visitors, and staff. This position is part-time, focusing on the day shift with the responsibility to work alternate weekends and weekday shifts, accommodating the hospital’s operational needs. The hourly pay range for this role is set at $19.99, reflecting the value and expertise required for maintaining high standards in food safety and culinary excellence.
The Cook will utilize their culinary skills and knowledge of safe food handling practices to produce a variety of meals while adhering to HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) and recipe standards. The candidate must have at least two years of cooking experience, with a preference for those holding ServSafe or food handlers certifications, underscoring the importance of compliance with food safety regulations in a healthcare setting. The position demands proficiency in operating and maintaining diverse kitchen equipment—such as meat slicers, roasting ovens, floor mixers, blenders, fryers, grills, broilers, and steamers—safely and efficiently.
This role requires meticulous attention to detail, including accurate preparation and portioning of food, maintaining proper temperatures, and ensuring the appearance and flavor of meals meet established standards. The Cook will also be responsible for tracking food quantities prepared and leftovers, requesting necessary ingredients based on production sheets, and coordinating meal timing to optimize operations and traffic flow within the hospital’s food service areas. Organizational skills and the ability to interpret production, catering, and menu instructions are essential, along with maintaining clean and orderly kitchen areas by the end of shifts.
Joining RWJUH Rahway Hospital means becoming part of a compassionate team that values each employee’s contributions while supporting their professional growth and well-being. RWJBarnabas Health offers a comprehensive Total Rewards package that includes paid time off, medical and prescription drug insurance, dental and vision coverage, retirement plans, disability insurance, life and accidental death insurance, tuition reimbursement programs, and wellness initiatives. In addition, employees enjoy access to voluntary benefits such as pet insurance and discounts with various partners, highlighting the organization’s commitment to a balanced and rewarding work-life experience.
Overall, this opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about food preparation in a healthcare environment where quality, safety, and service excellence are prioritized. The role not only supports patient health through nutrition but also contributes to the smooth functioning of the hospital’s dietary management department, making it a vital part of the healthcare delivery team.
