Job Description
This job opportunity is with a healthcare facility's Patient Food Services department, specifically for a Cook position. The organization is focused on providing nutritional and safe meals to patients while maintaining high standards of food quality and safety. The workplace is a professional kitchen environment where meal preparation is done both for patient tray lines as well as cafeteria and catered events. The cook will be working closely with an Executive Chef and other kitchen staff members to ensure menus and production forecasts are consistently met with quality and efficiency.
The role of the Cook in this healthcare setting is comprehensive and vital. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing both hot and cold food items that meet nutritional guidelines and patient dietary needs. This includes setting up food stations, serving food for the patient tray line, and supporting cafeteria operations as well as catered events. The Cook will play a significant role in maintaining food safety by monitoring temperatures and ensuring that all food items are produced to high standards of accuracy and acceptability. Alongside food preparation duties, the Cook is expected to assist with cleaning and sanitation of the kitchen area to uphold a hygienic environment. This is a full-time position with varied shifts, which implies a dynamic work schedule to meet hospital food service needs.
The Cook position requires an individual with a strong culinary background, ideally with formal training such as a culinary certification or an associate degree in culinary arts. Candidates must have at least one year of food service experience in a fast-paced, high production kitchen, with a preference given to those with prior healthcare cooking experience. Skillful operation of a range of kitchen equipment – including ovens, steamers, grills, mixers, deep fryers, and more – is essential. The Cook must be able to work well independently and also collaborate positively with co-workers and supervisors. The job also requires good organizational and problem-solving skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and quick adaptability to the fast-moving environment. Added to this are communication skills necessary for instructing new employees and dietetic students, as well as accurate mathematical ability to adjust recipes and quantify servings.
Additionally, compliance with health and safety regulations is mandatory. The Cook must obtain a Food Handler's Certification from the San Bernardino County Public Health Department upon hire, with preference for candidates who already hold SafeServ Manager certification. The certifications emphasize the facility's commitment to ensuring the highest standards of food handling and safety.
This role is an excellent fit for culinary professionals who seek to apply their skills in a healthcare atmosphere where patient care and safety are paramount. The Cook will have an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to patients' health and wellbeing through nutritious and safely prepared meals, working in a supportive and structured environment. Candidates interested in this full-time and varied shift role should be prepared for a demanding yet rewarding career in patient food services, with the chance to develop further within the healthcare culinary field.
