The role of the Cook at Denny's is crucial in ensuring that each guest receives high-quality meals prepared to company standards. Reporting directly to the General Manager and Restaurant Manager, the Cook is responsible for preparing and presenting food items according to the established menu specifications and timing requirements. This position demands adherence to all federal, state, and local food safety regulations as well as Denny's internal policies. Beyond cooking, the role encompasses maintaining organized and sanitary work areas, managing inventory, and providing assistance when needed to uphold operational efficiency. The Cook must possess strong product knowledge and a proactive approach to monitoring food quality and waste control, all while delivering courteous service to guests and collaborating effectively with team members. The position requires physical stamina to perform activities such as lifting, standing, and working in varying temperature conditions throughout shifts that may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Overall, the Cook's adherence to Denny's principles and operational standards greatly contributes to the restaurant’s success and guest satisfaction.

Job Requirements

  • must be 18 years old or older
  • must be able to lift and carry supplies up to 50 lbs
  • must have physical ability to bend, stoop, reach, and move in confined spaces
  • must be able to work inside and outside the restaurant
  • must meet state and local food handling regulations
  • must be able to stand and walk for 4 to 8 hour shifts
  • must be able to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends and holidays
  • must pass required tests and training
  • must maintain grooming and uniform standards
  • must have basic English communication skills
  • must demonstrate dependability and ability to follow instructions
  • must be able to work with potentially hazardous chemicals
  • must tolerate temperature extremes in kitchen and freezer areas

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • previous cooking or food preparation experience preferred
  • knowledge of food safety regulations
  • ability to read and follow recipes and instructions
  • strong communication skills
  • ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • basic math skills including units of measure

Job Duties

  • prepare, cook and present food to order following company brand standards and recipe specifications
  • follow correct prepping procedures using prep charts
  • properly store and rotate perishable stock
  • maintain proper food temperatures according to standards and regulations
  • prepare special orders as requested
  • maintain stock to shift par levels
  • call the wheel when necessary
  • organize and maintain work, cooler and storage areas
  • assist with product inventory and deliveries
  • clean and take proper care of kitchen equipment
  • adhere to all safe food handling principles
  • complete side work and deep cleaning assignments
  • possess strong product and menu knowledge
  • monitor waste and food cost controls
  • address complaints promptly
  • assist service assistants periodically
  • provide prompt and courteous service
  • follow Denny’s internal policies and procedures
