This opportunity is for the position of Cook, a vital role within The Salvation Army’s operational framework. The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious meals and snacks, adhering to established guidelines and scheduled times while ensuring food safety and presentation standards are met. Beyond basic meal preparation, the Cook plays an essential part in maintaining kitchen hygiene, cleaning kitchen equipment and facilities regularly, and managing kitchen inventory to support efficient and effective food service operations. The role requires a high level of diligence and care, particularly to meet health regulations and ensure the safety of food served to potentially vulnerable community members. Additionally, the position involves logistical tasks such as driving to pick up food donations, which supports the organization’s resourcefulness and sustainability efforts.
Working in a kitchen environment, the Cook must be physically capable of engaging in activities such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, climbing, and lifting heavy objects up to 75 pounds frequently. The position is standing-intensive, with some periods possibly allowing brief sitting breaks. Job Requirements
- Ability to meet attendance requirements
- Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language effectively
- Ability to cook, taste and smell food
- Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing
- Duties are performed standing and require squatting, climbing, bending, and walking
- Any of the preceding duties may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of sitting
- Extensive amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying heavy objects (up to 75 lbs.) frequently
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- One-year experience cooking food for large groups
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Job Duties
- Cooks and prepares a variety of foods and beverages utilizing kitchen equipment, utensils and supplies in accordance with acceptable and economical cooking methods
- Ensures that enough food is prepared based on the number of people to be served and that food is prepared in a timely manner as scheduled
- Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room
- Ensures that all meals are prepared in a safe manner
- Ensures all kitchen personnel practice proper personal hygiene
- Ensures compliance with health regulations
- Maintains proper supply and orderliness of kitchen stock inventory in order to meet the needs of the kitchen
- Informs supervisor if inventory is low so they may make orders and food purchases
- Drives to pick up food donations
- Cleans kitchen facilities, equipment and appliances regularly
