Job Description
Purdue University Dining Services is an integral part of the university's commitment to fostering a supportive and vibrant campus community. As a well-established provider of residential dining experiences, the dining service department plays a crucial role in enhancing the daily lives of students, faculty, and staff by offering nutritious, diverse, and high-quality meals. At Purdue, the emphasis goes beyond just food preparation and service; it is about building community and creating environments where everyone has a seat at the table. The dining courts are designed to serve the varied needs of the Purdue campus population, focusing on culinary excellence, sustainability, and inclusivity.
The role of a Cook within Purdue Dining Services is vital in delivering this mission. The Cook will be responsible for performing a variety of food service tasks that contribute to a seamless dining experience. Reporting to the Dining Court Manager, Assistant Manager, Chef, or other senior food service staff, this position requires versatility as the individual will rotate among several food service areas, undertaking food production, cooking, baking, bussing, serving, setting up stations, and ensuring a clean and organized workspace. This role involves working both independently and collaboratively to maintain the high standards expected within Purdue Dining Services.
This position primarily involves evening shifts, with hours typically from 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM, although some day shifts may be available depending on dining court operations. It is a year-round, full-time position that offers a broad range of benefits starting from the first day of employment. These benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, retirement plans matched by Purdue, paid vacation and sick leave, free meals during shifts, and designated uniforms including shoes and necessary personal protective equipment. Employees also have access to tuition assistance programs for themselves or their family members at Purdue University and free tuition at Purdue University Global.
The ideal candidate for this Cook position will demonstrate a stable work or education history, good judgment, strong communication, and basic math skills. The ability to build interpersonal and cross-cultural relationships is essential, reflecting Purdue's diverse community. It is important for the applicant to be dependable, capable of making independent decisions, and familiar with sanitation standards. Physical demands include the ability to stand, walk, reach, stoop, climb ladders, and frequently lift and carry 25 to 50 pounds, with occasional lifts up to 60 pounds. This role is not eligible for current full-time undergraduate students and requires a background check and non-exempt FLSA status, meaning overtime eligibility.
Purdue University Dining Services values diversity and encourages applications from minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. This is a fantastic opportunity for those looking to contribute to a dynamic campus environment while building their skills in food service within a supportive and community-focused setting.
