Job Description
The Salvation Army is a well-respected international movement recognized for its evangelical work as part of the universal Christian church. Grounded in the teachings of the Bible, it is motivated by the love of God and committed to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ as well as addressing human needs without discrimination. The organization provides vital social services and support to vulnerable populations worldwide, reflecting its deeply rooted mission and Christian principles. The Salvation Army operates numerous programs and facilities to aid those in need, including shelters, child development centers, and after-school programs. This commitment to compassionate service is evident in every facet of its work, including local community operations such as Alegria, the Alegria Child Development Center, the Zahn Family Shelter, and related programs like the B.L.A.S.T. After-School Program.
The Cook role at The Salvation Army is pivotal to maintaining the health and wellbeing of the residents and staff served within these programs. Working under the direct supervision of the Operation Manager and following guidelines from a professional dietician, the Cook is responsible for the preparation of three nutritious meals daily plus a snack, ensuring that all food served meets the dietary and quality standards expected by the organization. This includes preparing meals specifically for residents of Alegria, children enrolled in the B.L.A.S.T. After-School Program, staff members, as well as delivering meals for entities such as Lilly's Place and Lafayette where additional service is provided.
Attention to cleanliness and sanitation of food preparation and serving areas is a vital component of the role, adhering strictly to Health Department sanitation regulations and time-temperature guidelines to ensure food safety. The Cook must skillfully manage inventory and supplies, assist with timely ordering, and maintain storage in an organized manner using the FIFO (First In, First Out) method. This position demands effective time management to balance food preparation, quality control, and sanitation duties efficiently.
The role also involves adapting meal plans to meet special dietary needs based on physician's orders or dietician's recommendations, ensuring that individual health requirements are met with care and respect. Working collaboratively with other staff, volunteers, and Salvation Army representatives, the Cook supports the organization's broader mission by creating a nurturing and healthy environment through thoughtfully prepared meals. This position includes some driving responsibilities essential for logistical support related to kitchen needs.
The position is physically demanding; it requires the ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Additionally, the position requires COVID-19 vaccination compliance to align with health and safety standards. This role is ideal for a candidate who is culturally sensitive, non-judgmental, and knowledgeable about social issues such as homelessness and HIV/AIDS, reinforcing the compassionate ethos of The Salvation Army. Bilingual English/Spanish skills are preferred, enhancing communication with a diverse community. Overall, this Cook position provides an opportunity to contribute directly to the health, comfort, and dignity of individuals served by The Salvation Army, participating in a mission-driven environment that values service, respect, and inclusion.
