Job Description

Hennepin Healthcare is a comprehensive integrated system of care that serves the Minneapolis and greater Hennepin County community with excellence in patient care, education, and research. The Food Service/Kitchen department within Hennepin Healthcare is currently seeking a dedicated Baker/Cook to join the team. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position with 80 hours per pay period, including day and evening shifts, Monday through Friday as well as weekends. The role is primarily on-site at the Minneapolis Downtown Campus, providing an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to patient and visitor experiences through the preparation and presentation of food. The pay range for this role is competitive, starting at $21.35 and going up to $26.56 per hour, depending on skills, licensure, certifications, education, and experience.

The Baker/Cook will operate under the supervision of a chef and is crucial in preparing meals for patients, staff, visitors, and special functions. Responsibilities include preparing various meal selections such as hot cereal, soups, gravies, meats including roast beef and pork, breads, and an assortment of desserts like pastries, cakes, and cookies. The role requires proficiency in operating kitchen equipment, including ranges, tilting braziers, slicers, choppers, steamers, steam-jacketed kettles, and mixers. The position includes responsibility for maintaining overall kitchen sanitation and ensuring food safety by adhering to standardized recipes and proper food handling methods.

Additionally, the Baker/Cook serves as a backup for other cooks and may prepare special food items tailored to dietary requirements. This position sometimes involves assisting in related facility service operations and training residents or inmates participating in kitchen work programs. Part of the role includes quality checks, food production scheduling, inventory management, and assisting with ordering supplies.

The ideal candidate will have at least one year of relevant experience in a hospital or health setting or equivalent education and experience. Preferred qualifications include completion of high school with additional training in food cooking principles or a culinary degree. Job Requirements

  • One year of relevant experience in a moderately large-scale environment such as a health or hospital setting or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Completion of high school or equivalent
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes and kitchen safety guidelines
  • Capability to operate kitchen equipment safely
  • Willingness to work day and evening shifts including weekends
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
  • Commitment to maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen

Job Qualifications

  • One year of relevant experience in a moderately large-scale environment such as a health or hospital setting or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Equivalent of four years of high school with completion of on-the-job training in principles of food cooking
  • Culinary degree preferred

Job Duties

  • Checks menu and recipes via standardized recipes
  • Checks supply of necessary ingredients
  • Prepares meal selections such as hot cereal, soups, gravy, roast beef, pork, breads, and desserts including pastries, cakes, and cookies
  • Operates kitchen appliances such as range, tilting brazier pan, slicer, chopper, steamer, steam jacketed kettle, mixer
  • Serves as back-up for other cooks
  • May prepare special food items in accordance with special diet requirements
  • May assist in related facilities services operations
  • Prepare standardized recipes
  • Performs quality and quantity checks
  • Use proper methods in receiving, handling, and storing products
  • Uses production sheets according to procedures
  • Avoids waste, assists in cost containment
  • Train and provide work directions to residents (inmates) in a kitchen work program at a County correctional facility including meal preparation, cleaning cooking/eating utensils, cleaning floors, and set-up/serving of food
  • Under direct supervision of the chef, prepares and portions food for patients, employees, and special functions
  • Prepares baked goods and desserts for cafeteria and patients
  • Performs various baking tests for custards, muffins, and danish and tests new recipes
  • Schedules daily food preparations as patient and cafeteria menus dictate
  • Assigned to supervise and assist in the operation of the patient tray line
  • Assists in checking various perishable and nonperishable food orders
  • May place weekly food orders for milk, bread, etc
  • Responsible for cleaning and proper use of equipment and reports repairs as needed
  • Works alternate weekends and may assist in providing work direction to other kitchen employees
  • Performs work of equal skill and responsibility as directed and may also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility
  • May be requested to do work of lesser responsibility when the workload of the department requires
