Job Description
Grand Central Bakery, a pioneer in the artisan bread movement since 1989, is renowned for introducing rustic artisan loaves to Northwest tables and remains deeply rooted in sustainable and ethical business practices. As a Certified B Corporation, Grand Central Bakery upholds its commitment to using business as a force for good, demonstrating remarkable dedication to environmental stewardship, local sourcing, employee welfare, and community investment. The bakery operates with a mission to enrich lives through nourishing baked goods, honoring the heritage of traditional baking techniques while adapting to modern sustainability standards.
As part of a vibrant and ethical organization, the Cook role at Grand Central Bakery holds critical importance in ensuring the consistent quality and efficiency of all cold side kitchen products. This includes preparing an array of items such as salads, condiments, some oven-roasted products, sliced meats and cheeses, and soups. The position entails managing daily inventory within walk-in coolers, preparing items for the following day, and assisting senior cooks with a variety of culinary tasks. Working in this role requires attention to detail, a passion for culinary craft, and the ability to thrive within a cooperative production team environment. This role represents the entry-level in a progressive cooking career path with the bakery.
This part-time Cook position, paying $21.99 per hour and eligible for overtime, involves working three days per week, including Saturdays and holidays, necessitating schedule flexibility. The cook works under the direct guidance of the Cuisine Manager and is accountable to the Head Cook and Senior Cooks, ensuring that all culinary operations align with Grand Central Bakery’s high standards for quality, safety, and sustainability. The establishment operates year-round, seven days a week, reinforcing the need for a dependable and adaptable team member.
The Cook’s responsibilities encompass cleanliness and organization of the workstation, proficiency in essential kitchen stations—dishwashing, lettuce washing, slicing, packing, cold preparation, and light oven work. The Cook also supports training of staff on foundational stations and engages in preparation of test recipes. Operational duties include order receiving, inventory management, compliance with food safety standards like GMP, HAACP, and food defense protocols, and active communication about daily and seasonal production goals.
Emphasizing a culture of respect, collaboration, and continuous learning, the Cook’s role contributes significantly to fostering an anti-racist, inclusive environment that champions diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate exemplifies a positive work ethic and models excellent customer service and professional communication. Physical demands include standing for the entire shift, frequent walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and handling various kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
Joining Grand Central Bakery as a Cook means becoming part of a legacy brand committed to quality bread and a sustainable future. The bakery offers a supportive atmosphere where team members grow their culinary and professional skills while contributing to a socially responsible and environmentally conscious business. This opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about food, community, and sustainability seeking a meaningful role with room for growth within an established and respected bakery.
