Job Description

The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) Reentry Division is a key component of the state’s efforts to improve public safety by positively changing lives. With a mission that focuses on innovative and evidence-based practices, DOC leads nationwide initiatives aimed at reducing recidivism and enhancing community safety. The agency employs more than 8,000 dedicated professionals who work in various settings including prisons, community corrections, and administrative offices. They collaborate with law enforcement officers, treatment providers, and community members to create environments where incarcerated individuals have the opportunity to make decisions that contribute to a safer society. The DOC embraces diversity and is committed to operating a safe, humane corrections system that partners with others to transform lives for a better Washington.

The Department of Corrections Reentry Division is currently seeking motivated and qualified candidates to fill multiple permanent and on-call positions as Cook 2 at Eleanor Chase House (ECHRC) and Brownstone Reentry Centers (BSRC) located in Spokane, Washington. This recruitment process may also be used to fill future permanent and non-permanent openings. The Cook 2 position is designated as an in-training role; depending on a candidate’s qualifications, there is potential for appointment at either the Cook 1 or Cook 2 level. The Cook 1 classification serves as an entry-level in-training position with a salary range of $3,554.00 to $4,719.00 monthly and on-call pay ranging from $20.43 to $27.12 hourly. The Cook 2 level earns between $3,897.00 and $5,209.00 monthly with on-call pay from $22.40 to $29.94 hourly.

In this role, cooks will contribute directly to the agency’s mission by planning, ordering, preparing, and serving nutritious, high-quality meals to residents in accordance with the Department’s certified meal plan. These meals adhere to recommended dietary allowances and comply with all state and federal regulations, as well as budgetary considerations. The position requires skill in preparing meals in a timely and safe manner to meet the dietary needs of the population served in the reentry centers.

The Cook 2 is responsible for conducting precise mathematical calculations to convert recipes and determine accurate food quantities needed based on menu requirements and population sizes. They execute proper portion control protocols and ensure the quality and quantity of food products during and after preparation. Knowledge and application of rethermalization processes are essential, as well as employing progressive cooking techniques designed to enhance quality control and minimize waste. The cook must adhere strictly to safety and sanitation standards, maintaining personal hygiene and cleanliness of food preparation areas as dictated by state and local Health Department regulations.

Additional responsibilities include handling special diets required for medical or religious reasons, managing inventory and food storage effectively, and ensuring the proper use and cleanliness of kitchen equipment. The role also involves receiving and storing raw and prepared foods, ordering supplies, submitting invoices, and working within budgetary constraints. The Cook 2 must also monitor residents working in the kitchen, enforcing safety and security protocols, managing tool and key control, and intervening in emergency situations when necessary. Training and supervising residents in their kitchen duties is also a key element of this position, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to rehabilitation and safety within the facilities.

Candidates for these roles should expect to work in a dynamic and challenging environment where safety, teamwork, and dedication to public service are paramount. The Department of Corrections offers competitive and comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, and opportunities for flexible schedules and professional development. This position supports the Department’s vision of working together for safer communities and aligns closely with its mission of improving public safety by positively changing lives.
