Job Description

Brigham Young University (BYU) is the flagship higher education institution of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Founded with a strong commitment to academic excellence and spiritual growth, BYU is located in Provo, Utah, and is widely recognized not only for its world-class education but also for its deep commitment to inspired religious values. At BYU, the mission is to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life, fostering a unique environment that harmoniously blends faith, learning, and service. The university is dedicated to nurturing a culture of belonging, where every member feels valued as part of a Christ-centered community. This commitment is reflected in weekly devotionals, diverse opportunities for learning and personal growth, and a supportive work environment situated on a beautiful and historic campus.

The role of Cook 1 within BYU Dining Services is a vital part of the university’s daily operations, especially serving the student population in high-volume dining environments like Cannon Commons. Cannon Commons is one of BYU's primary residential dining facilities, known for providing quality meals to students in a fast-paced, dynamic setting. This position is designed for candidates who are passionate about culinary arts and eager to contribute to a service-oriented team that prioritizes both efficiency and food quality.

The Cook 1 position involves preparing food according to established recipes, managing ingredients and materials, and maintaining cleanliness and organization within the kitchen workspace. The role requires adherence to food safety procedures, including proper storage techniques such as FIFO (First In, First Out) and allergen control, ensuring that all aspects of food handling and preparation meet strict quality standards. In addition to food preparation, the position supports smooth kitchen operations during peak service times, coordinating production order and student staff efforts under the guidance of Cook II supervisors.

This role also includes basic supervisory responsibilities, where the cook may oversee a small number of student employees, providing them with guidance and support in a collaborative and student-focused work environment. The position is suited for individuals who are not only skilled in culinary techniques but who also appreciate the importance of teamwork and mentorship.

BYU Dining Services values candidates who have at least one year of food service experience, and while graduation from Culinary School and additional experience are preferred, they are not mandatory. The job demands physical stamina and the ability to handle medium-weight materials frequently, operate kitchen equipment efficiently, and withstand environmental factors like variable temperatures and wet conditions typically found in commercial kitchen settings. Safety is a priority, and candidates must be able to pass a physical exam and lift test.

The position offers a competitive starting pay ranging from $18.75 to $23.75 per hour, translating to an annual salary of $39,500 to $49,500. Compensation is based on internal equity and experience, with opportunities for higher offers for candidates with exceptional qualifications. Moreover, employees at BYU enjoy comprehensive benefits including retirement contributions, generous paid time off, health and wellness programs, tuition benefits, and unique perks such as free on-campus parking and transit passes.

BYU strongly prefers to hire faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who hold and are worthy to hold a current temple recommend, supporting its mission and values consistently. Overall, working at BYU offers a distinctive opportunity to contribute to a meaningful mission, collaborate within a diverse and inclusive community, and grow professionally in an inspiring environment rich with history and tradition.
