The Department of Families, Children, and Youth within the City of Hartford is dedicated to supporting community well-being through various programs aimed at early learning and nutritional support. Responsibilities include preparing and cooking diverse meals and snacks according to strict menu plans, including accommodating special dietary requirements. The individual will maintain rigorous hygiene and sanitation standards in line with state and federal regulations, oversee inventory and ordering processes to minimize waste and ensure supply adequacy, and contribute to meal planning alongside supervisors and city personnel. This role requires an understanding of food safety, nutrition, commercial kitchen equipment, and recordkeeping.
Additionally, the job involves training other staff members, reporting on kitchen operations and maintenance, and occasionally shopping for supplies or making deliveries. The ability to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, is expected to meet the demands of program schedules. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills needed to work effectively with a diverse population as well as the practical skills required for operating a commercial kitchen safely and efficiently. Physical demands include lifting up to 40 pounds and working in varying temperature environments inherent to kitchen operations.

Job Requirements

Job Duties
- Prepare and cook a variety of meals and snacks according to menu plans including special dietary needs

- Serve meals and snacks in accordance with safety and sanitation guidelines
- Order food and kitchen supplies ensuring adequate inventory and minimizing waste
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe kitchen and dining environments
- Train staff on kitchen operations, safety, and reporting procedures
- Track and update kitchen equipment maintenance logs and report issues
- Prepare records and reports as required
- Shop for food supplies or make deliveries to other city locations as needed
