The Cook 1 position at Delaware Valley Veterans' Home is an essential role within this supportive environment, focusing on the preparation of wholesome and carefully prepared meals that cater to the dietary needs of veteran residents. As a full-time position working second shift hours from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM, this role ensures that all food preparation, kitchen operations, and sanitation duties are performed with the highest standards of safety and quality. The cook will be responsible for preparing a variety of foods including meats, vegetables, soups, casseroles, sauces, and baked goods, all tailored to meet both regular and therapeutic diet requirements. Job Requirements
- Must be able to perform essential job functions
- Conditional offer of employment requires a medical examination
- Must submit and obtain approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including PA State Police and FBI clearance
- Full-time availability to work 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM on rotating days, weekends, and holidays
- Must comply with Older Adult Protective Services Act provisions
- Must provide detailed and relevant experience and education on application
- Must adhere to no telework policy for this position
Job Qualifications
- Experience in cooking or quantity food preparation
- Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training
- Education in foods, nutrition, dietetics, food service, institutional management or a related field (preferred)
- Previous formal baking training (preferred)
- Current ServSafe certification or other licenses and safety certifications (preferred)
- Experience as a baker in a large volume preparation operation (preferred)
- Experience using and converting standardized recipes (preferred)
- Experience mixing, proofing, and finishing yeast raised products in a large scale food service operation (preferred)
- Experience baking and decorating cakes and pastries (preferred)
- Experience in food service operations for geriatric and/or physically ill patient/resident populations (preferred)
Job Duties
- Prepare cooked meats, vegetables, soups, casseroles, sauces, and baked items for regular and therapeutic diets
- Use kitchen equipment such as ovens, fryers, kettles, mixers, and grills, and report malfunctions to supervisors
- Clean and sanitize utensils, work areas, floors, and equipment used in food preparation and meal service
- Weigh, measure, package, and label ingredients, and assist in developing and testing new recipes
- Record food and supply usage, prepare requisitions, and assist with receiving and inspecting deliveries
- Assign, review, and assist with routine food production tasks, and help train new cooks
