The Cook 1 position within GAP Ministries is a pivotal role situated in the GAP Kitchen department. Reporting directly to the Sous Chef, this position involves preparing, cooking, and delivering meals according to program needs, including mobile meals, catering events, schools, and foster care feeding initiatives. The role offers both part-time and full-time opportunities with an hourly pay of $16.50 and varies in working hours, including nights and weekends. As a safety-sensitive position, the Cook 1 adheres strictly to health and safety regulations, including ServSafe certification and compliance with standards such as NSLP and CACFP.
The Cook 1 supports the executive chef and chef de cuisine in menu planning, recipe development, and food preparation. Responsibilities extend to maintaining kitchen cleanliness, complying with sanitation rules, and assisting in food cost efficiency by managing ingredient sourcing and minimizing waste. Additionally, the Cook 1 helps coordinate volunteer efforts and ensures that all kitchen activities follow GAP Ministries' policies and safety standards. This role is essential to sustaining the ministry's mission of providing nutritious meals and fostering a collaborative, respectful environment with ongoing training and professional development. Job Requirements
- Successfully pass FBI fingerprint clearance
- Clear criminal background check and central registry in relevant states
- Provide personal and business references
- Current driver license meeting GAP Ministries insurability
- Provide 39-month safe driving record
- Pass mandatory drug screen
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Capable of kneeling, bending, stooping, and extended standing
- Manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills
- Obtain medical release if health issues arise
Job Qualifications
- Two years experience in food service or with NSLP, CACFP, or government assistance programs
- Must be at least 22 years old
- ServSafe certified or able to obtain within six months
- Physically fit to perform job duties
- Positive attitude reflecting ministry values
- Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups
- Ability to stay calm under pressure
Job Duties
- Help the executive chef plan, prepare, deliver, and serve meals
- Maintain cleanliness and comply with health and safety regulations
- Wash dishes, utensils, and pans
- Clean and mop kitchen, serving, and dining areas
- Ensure compliance with ServSafe and other food safety guidelines
- Assist in managing emergencies and inventory issues
- Prepare and portion food for day care and mobile meals
- Assist with catering events and employee dining room setup
- Help develop menus utilizing food donations
- Train and lead volunteers, students, and staff
- Maintain records of training, testing, audits, and inspections
- Attend staff meetings and represent GAP Ministries professionally
- Perform other tasks as assigned by executive chef or sous chef
