Job Description
The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is a state government agency dedicated to making Arizona's communities safer by delivering effective rehabilitative services to the young people entrusted to its care. ADJC emphasizes an evidence-based approach to rehabilitation, aiming to enhance the well-being of youth, equipping them with essential skills and resources needed for successful reintegration into society. The department operates secure facilities throughout Arizona and is committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for adjudicated youth.
One of the key locations within ADJC is Adobe Mountain School, situated at 2800 W. Pinnacle Peak Road in Phoenix, Arizona. This institution is one of the primary juvenile correctional facilities where youth receive comprehensive educational and rehabilitative services. ADJC’s Food Services Division at Adobe Mountain School plays a crucial role in supporting the overall health and well-being of these young people by preparing nutritious meals that meet strict health and safety standards.
The Cook 1 position at the ADJC is a vital role within the Food Services team. This role involves preparing, portioning, cooking, and presenting a variety of hot and cold food items for multiple meal periods including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special catered events. The position is full-time with a salary ranging from $22.29 to $46,365.28 annually, aligned with grade 15 pay scale. To incentivize qualified candidates, ADJC offers a $5,000 hiring bonus.
As a Cook 1, the individual will be expected to work closely with youth employees by training, evaluating, guiding, and monitoring their vocational competencies and behavior. This not only supports the operations of a large-scale kitchen but also aids in the developmental growth of the youth under ADJC’s care. The role also demands adherence to high standards of food safety and operating procedures as mandated by health codes and the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program (NSLP/SBP).
The Cook 1 will be responsible for maintaining kitchen inventories, ordering equipment and supplies, and ensuring all meal production meets posted standards. This includes preparing special diet meals and working within a secure institutional setting where safety and security protocols are strictly observed. Additionally, the cook will be involved in crisis intervention, youth management, and maintaining accurate documentation including reports and logs.
Ideal candidates for this role will have experience working in large-scale kitchens with high meal volumes, knowledge of food safety regulations, and the ability to operate within a secure environment involving juvenile populations. The role offers a unique opportunity to contribute positively to the lives of youth while advancing one’s culinary and supervisory skills within a well-established state agency. ADJC is an equal opportunity employer committed to accommodating persons with disabilities and encourages diverse applicants to apply.
