Job Description

The Parks and Recreation Special Events division is a dedicated branch of the municipal government that focuses on organizing and managing community events and recreational programs. Their aim is to provide residents with a variety of engaging, fun, and inclusive activities that promote community spirit, wellness, and cultural enrichment. This division handles everything from large-scale public celebrations and festivals to specialized programming for children and individuals with developmental disabilities. Operating within a welcoming office environment and the dynamic outdoor settings of various parks and recreational facilities, the division upholds a commitment to professional public service and community engagement.

This role within the Parks and Recreation Special Events division is designed for a highly motivated individual with a background in event coordination and vendor management. It requires versatility as the position involves a blend of extensive fieldwork combined with administrative responsibilities. The candidate must demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills to handle multiple tasks such as overseeing facility management, maintaining records, coordinating registrations, and managing day-to-day office operations including bookkeeping and processing purchase orders. A strong customer service approach is critical since the role frequently interacts with the public, vendors, and program participants.

In addition to administrative duties, the position demands hands-on support in programming activities, preparation of public service announcements, and cash handling. Working knowledge of recreational programming is preferred, and competencies in clerical duties and public relations are valuable assets. Due to the varied nature of programming, the individual must be capable of working effectively with children at Four Freedoms Park and with persons with developmental disabilities in Special Populations programs. Furthermore, the candidate must be flexible to work weekends, evenings, and selected holidays including New Year’s Eve and July 4th, ensuring event coverage during peak community celebrations.

The working conditions primarily entail a common office environment with periods of sedentary work balanced by the physical demands of field duties such as lifting and moving objects up to 20 pounds. The role requires strong visual concentration for data entry and the effective use of standard office equipment. Candidates must be able to follow and communicate instructions clearly, apply problem-solving skills, and utilize standard English proficiency. Safety compliance is crucial as the position is designated as safety-sensitive and requires fingerprinting.

This job is essential for the successful implementation of the Parks and Recreation Department’s mission to deliver high-quality public event services. A minimum education of a high school diploma or GED is required alongside CPR and First Aid certifications, which must be obtained within 60 days of hire to ensure preparedness for any emergency situations on-site. Overall, the role offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to be an integral part of community events and recreational programming, supporting diverse populations and contributing positively to the community’s vibrancy and quality of life.
