The role of Construction Manager at Dennis Group is a critical leadership position within its field operations team. The Construction Manager operates as the project site supervisor responsible for overseeing the daily construction activities on medium-sized food and beverage processing facility projects. This is a full-time, on-site role based primarily in Norfolk, VA, with travel required to project locations across the USA and Canada, sometimes up to 100% travel. The usual work schedule involves 10 days onsite followed by 4 days off, accommodating the intensive nature of construction timelines and site demands. The Construction Manager manages subcontractor coordination, site safety enforcement, project scheduling, budgeting, permitting, regulatory compliance, and contract administration. Strong communication skills are essential as the role involves frequent interactions with clients, subcontractors, architects, engineers, building officials, and internal teams.

This position requires someone who can autonomously oversee construction phases while ensuring that each project’s timeline, budget, and safety standards are met or surpassed. Key responsibilities include directing subcontractor activities; monitoring installations of process, mechanical, and utility equipment; administering change orders; managing inspection processes; and supporting facility start-up activities. The Construction Manager also supports a variety of administrative duties such as preparing project reports, coordinating third-party testing, and assisting in engineering calculations and permit application preparations. Additionally, mentoring junior staff and fostering a collaborative, productive environment forms an integral component of this leadership role.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in construction science, building science, construction engineering, or a related field and has proven industrial project experience, especially in design-build contracting within food and beverage facilities. Familiarity with construction management software and AutoCAD is advantageous. Candidates must be physically capable of navigating construction sites under diverse weather conditions, able to lift up to 50 pounds, and be available to respond to site emergencies as needed.
