Job Description
CMT Technical Services (CMT) is a respected leader in the field of materials testing, inspection, and engineering services. With a mission that extends beyond simply building infrastructure, CMT is committed to constructing strong communities, fostering careers, and cultivating a culture that values integrity, collaboration, and technical excellence. Operating across multiple regions, CMT offers a dynamic and supportive environment for professionals who are passionate about ensuring the safety and durability of critical structures such as highways, bridges, commercial buildings, and energy projects. The company’s dedication to quality and innovation is reflected in every project, making CMT a trusted partner in the construction and engineering industries.
The Construction Lab Technician role at CMT is a vital position based in Denver, Colorado, offering an hourly wage range of $18 to $23, depending on experience. This full-time, non-exempt position typically involves a 40-hour workweek, although the schedule may vary. As a Construction Lab Technician, you will play a key role in the laboratory operations that underpin project success. Your responsibilities will include receiving, logging, and preparing construction material samples such as soils, aggregates, and concrete. Additionally, you will conduct a variety of standardized laboratory tests, including moisture content analysis, sieve and gradation analysis, Atterberg limits, Proctor compaction, and compressive strength testing for concrete.
Accuracy and attention to detail are paramount in this role, as you will be responsible for recording data and reporting your findings to the Laboratory Manager. Maintaining laboratory equipment, tools, and workspace cleanliness is also critical to comply with safety, quality, and accreditation standards. The position requires assistance with quality assurance and quality control documentation and basic report preparation. Following established procedures and working collaboratively to support team success are essential traits for this role.
The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent and hold a valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Physical ability to lift up to 60 pounds safely is required, along with strong work ethic, meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to producing quality results. Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook, are necessary, as well as the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
CMT places a strong emphasis on certification and technical qualifications aligned with Colorado standards. Required certifications include ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I or ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician - Grade I, and WAQTC or CDOT materials technician qualifications for soil and aggregate testing, or an equivalent credential. Preferred qualifications include additional ACI certifications such as Aggregate Testing Technician - Level I, NICET/ACI certifications related to materials testing, WAQTC Embankment & Base and In-Place Density certification modules, and Radiation Safety and Nuclear Gauge safety certification for density and moisture testing.
Candidates with prior hands-on experience in a construction materials testing laboratory will stand out, as will those familiar with ASTM, AASHTO, or CDOT test methods. Educational background in civil engineering, construction management, geology, or related fields, along with strong communication and organizational skills, will enhance your candidacy.
This role is primarily laboratory-based but includes occasional travel to local project sites. Working in a safety-focused environment governed by internal quality standards and state transportation project requirements, you will contribute significantly to ensuring the quality and safety of vital infrastructure projects.
At CMT Technical Services, equal opportunity employment practices are upheld, ensuring a professional workplace where respect and fairness are priorities for all team members, regardless of background or status. Join CMT and be part of a team dedicated to building lasting impact through technical excellence and collaborative effort.
