Job Description

Rio Tinto is a global leader in mining and materials, with a rich legacy spanning over 150 years. Operating across 35 countries, Rio Tinto produces essential materials such as iron ore, copper, aluminium, and critical minerals that are vital for the global energy transition and the prosperity of communities and nations worldwide. With a firm commitment to innovation, sustainability, and environmental responsibility, Rio Tinto continuously strives to find better ways to supply the materials the world needs. The company’s operations reflect high standards in environmental, social, and governance practices, ensuring responsible mining and material production. Together with a focus on fostering partnerships, collaboration, and win-win solutions, Rio Tinto is dedicated to solving complex challenges and advancing sustainable mining practices.

The position available is for a Construction Coordinator based at Rio Tinto’s Kennecott operation near Salt Lake City, Utah. Kennecott is a world-class integrated copper mine known for its extensive facilities including a concentrator, smelter, and refinery. This mine has been actively producing copper, precious metals like gold and silver, molybdenum, and sulfuric acid since 1903. It stands as one of the leading copper producers in the United States, contributing approximately 11 percent of the country’s annual copper output.

As a Construction Coordinator within the Central Projects team at Kennecott, you will play a pivotal role in planning and coordinating construction activities to ensure projects are executed safely, on time, within budget, and meet quality standards. This is a hands-on role that requires close collaboration with project managers, contractors, operational personnel, and other stakeholders involved in various phases of project delivery including commissioning and operational readiness. The role demands a strong focus on safety, detailed review of construction plans and scopes for constructability and potential risks, and proactive resolution of issues to minimize disruptions.

This role is ideal for individuals who are motivated by meaningful work that directly supports large-scale mining projects, offering abundant opportunities for growth, skill development, and the chance to contribute to a leading global mining organization. The workplace culture at Rio Tinto emphasizes safety as the number one priority, inclusivity, and respect for diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Rio Tinto values teamwork, integrity, continuous improvement, and the wellbeing of its employees.

You will be responsible for managing project logistics, resources, and schedules, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental requirements, and maintaining thorough project documentation. Your collaboration will extend across disciplines such as civil, mechanical, structural, and electrical construction activities, supporting smooth project handovers and operational transitions. The role offers competitive compensation reflective of skills and experience, complemented by an annual incentive bonus and comprehensive benefits. Rio Tinto also prides itself on providing a supportive environment with family-friendly health programs, retirement plans, share ownership options, and generous leave policies. Committed to equal employment opportunity, Rio Tinto actively encourages applications from diverse candidates and fosters an inclusive workplace where all team members can thrive. This role is open to candidates legally authorized to work in the United States; however, visa sponsorship is not available.
