The role of Concrete Ready Mix Truck Driver at The Shelly Company involves operating a specialized vehicle designed to manufacture, deliver, and unload ready-mixed concrete in accordance with customer specifications. This is a vital position requiring a safe and efficient driving approach, attention to detail, and excellent communication with dispatchers and plant managers. The driver will navigate challenging and congested job site conditions while adhering to all relevant safety regulations, including OSHA and USDOT/FMSCA standards. In addition to operating the mixer truck, the driver is expected to maintain truck cleanliness, perform routine inspections, handle materials safely, and assist with unloading. This position requires a minimum of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, based on customer demand. The physical nature of the job demands that the driver be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds frequently and performing tasks such as climbing ladders, handling mixer chutes, and performing general clean-up duties.
The successful candidate will actively contribute to a positive team environment while maintaining independent work capabilities and upholding the company's strict adherence to policies and procedures. Responsibilities include using technology such as tablets or computers for delivery and communication tasks, collecting payments, and providing basic product knowledge to customers. Job Requirements
- Valid Class B commercial driver license
- DOT medical card
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Minimum of 1 year related experience or training or equivalent education
- Ability to read, write, and understand safety documents and instructions
- Ability to perform basic math calculations
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently
- Ability to handle physically demanding tasks including lifting 50 pounds
- Willingness to work flexible hours including nights and weekends
- Commitment to safety and adherence to company policies
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
- Must wear required personal protective equipment
- Timely and regular attendance
Job Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Class B CDL
- High school diploma preferred or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year related experience or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to effectively present information to customers and coworkers
- Ability to perform basic mathematical operations including arithmetic with money, weight, volume, and distance
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
- Ability to handle stressful situations while meeting customer service demands
- Ability to use tablets and computers
- Ability to follow GPS and read map books
- Must acquire and maintain valid DOT medical card and state-issued commercial driver license
Job Duties
- Work safely and efficiently
- Safely maintain work area and vehicle in a clean and orderly condition
- Comply with all OSHA and USDOT/FMCSA safe-operating practices
- Use PPE as directed
- Operate ready-mix concrete truck to deliver to construction sites safely and efficiently, following laws and dispatch instructions
- Maintain communication with Dispatcher or Plant Manager regarding deliveries
- Check delivery tickets for special instructions and complete as required
- Frequently climb 8 foot ladder to ensure proper materials are loaded safely, obtain signatures as required
- Handle 50 pound mixer chutes safely
- Add admixtures to drum when necessary
- Maintain cleanliness of the truck, including rinsing drum before and after deliveries
- Collect money from customers and record transactions on receipt
- Read receipts and write details on tickets
- Respond to customer questions on basic product and concrete instructions
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report maintenance needs
- Use tablets or computers and GPS/map reading for deliveries
- Perform truck and plant maintenance, cleaning, sweeping, shoveling, and assorted yard work while maintaining safety
