The Assistant Controller / Assistant Director of Finance position at Highgate Hotels is a vital role within the hotel’s accounting operations. This role is responsible for supervising and coordinating all accounting functions to ensure timely, accurate, and consistent financial reporting aligned with company policies, GAAP, and all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The Assistant Controller supports the Controller to maintain firm control over the hotel’s income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. This position oversees daily operations including Payroll, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Income Journal, General Cashiering, Taxes, and internal controls. The Assistant Controller may also advise and implement changes to improve operational efficiency. Responsibilities extend to managing the accounting staff, ensuring adherence to financial policies, preparing financial statements and reports, and supporting the annual budgeting and forecasting processes. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 to 4 years of hotel accounting experience, a bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, and strong leadership and communication skills. Job Requirements

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • Experience: minimum 2-4 years of hotel accounting experience
  • Skills: knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP), strong analytical and leadership skills, excellent communication abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple accounting functions including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, cashier operations, and tax compliance
  • Familiarity with financial reporting and budgeting
  • Must be able to supervise and develop staff
  • Understanding of hotel industry leases and management contracts
  • Ability to work under established policies and procedures and make informed decisions
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to ensure accuracy in financial operations

Job Qualifications

  • At least 2 - 4 years of hotel accounting experience
  • bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • requires knowledge of all the functions performed by the subordinate reporting directly or indirectly to the Hotel Controller
  • requires advanced knowledge of the accounting, finance and hospitality professions
  • requires experiential knowledge for management of people and complex problems
  • requires ability to analyze activities or information involving some original data manipulation or interpretation to arrive at a logical conclusion
  • requires the ability to make decisions guided by established policies and procedures
  • requires the ability to communicate so as to provide information and services, supervisory skills

Job Duties

  • Supervise the Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Cashier and Night Audit employees
  • interview, recommend hiring, train, develop, empower, schedule, coach and counsel, recommend and conduct performance and salary reviews, resolve problems, provide open communications and recommend discipline and termination, as appropriate
  • supervise the daily accounting operations ensuring compliance with the SOPs and LSOPs, GAAP and all federal, state and local laws and regulations
  • analyze and reconcile all general ledger accounts and bank statements to ensure financial information is available and accurate
  • prepare financial statements and reports to ensure accurate, timely information is available for management
  • assist in the compilation and preparation of the annual budget, forecasts, taxes and other financial reports to provide support thus ensuring accurate, timely information is available for management and owners
  • train, monitor and coordinate the implementation and maintenance of financial and cash controls and information flow throughout the other departments in the hotel to ensure compliance, accurate records and minimize liabilities, losses and expenses
  • resolve problems and ensure maintenance of the accounting systems and equipment to ensure smooth operations
  • analyze and be familiar with tenants, leases and rent reports and ensure hotel is in compliance with hotel leases and management contracts
  • assumes the responsibilities of the Controller in his/her absence
