Job Description

The Blank Park Zoo, located in Des Moines, Iowa, is a renowned non-profit zoological institution that is home to more than 2,800 animals representing nearly 240 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Accredited fully by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Zoo is committed to its mission of inspiring an appreciation of the natural world through dedicated efforts in conservation, education, research, and recreation. As a community-centered organization, the Blank Park Zoo plays a vital role in promoting wildlife awareness and environmental stewardship among the public, bringing people closer to nature in a fun, educational, and interactive environment.

The position open is that of a Community Presence Coordinator within the Development Department, offered as a full-time role for candidates with at least one year of relevant experience. This role is critical in enhancing the visibility and community engagement of the Blank Park Zoo by developing and maintaining a strong presence at external events and managing important zoo initiatives. The Community Presence Coordinator will spearhead efforts to coordinate and staff outreach events, represent the organization positively, and handle the logistical and operational aspects of unique programs such as Behind the Scenes tours. These tours provide guests with exclusive access to the inner workings of the zoo, fostering deeper connections and understanding of animal conservation and care.

Additionally, this position places significant responsibility on managing the auction component of the popular Safari Soiree event — a vital fundraiser for the Zoo. The coordinator will lead the procurement of auction items, work closely with committee members to solicit donations effectively, and oversee the auction software system to ensure smooth, successful auction operations. In performing these duties, the coordinator is expected to demonstrate strong organizational skills, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal aptitudes to interact with diverse audiences, volunteers, and zoo staff.

The role also offers a dynamic work environment, requiring the individual to work both indoors in a standard office setting and outdoors at events, often traveling offsite and managing tasks in changing weather conditions. Physical demands include moving objects up to 50 pounds, navigating various terrains, and standing or sitting for extended periods. The coordinator must maintain professionalism, be customer-oriented, and demonstrate strong communication skills, capable of solving challenges creatively and efficiently.

Overall, the Community Presence Coordinator position provides a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the mission and success of the Blank Park Zoo by fostering community support, increasing public engagement, and driving fundraising efforts. This role is ideal for someone passionate about wildlife, committed to community outreach, and skilled in event coordination and public relations, seeking a rewarding full-time career in the non-profit zoological sector.
