Job Description

Texas A&M University Health Science Center is one of the fastest-growing academic health centers in the United States. It comprises five colleges along with numerous centers and institutes dedicated to advancing health through transformative education, innovative research, and team-based healthcare delivery. The Center for Community Health & Aging at Texas A&M Health plays a pivotal role in addressing pressing public health issues through community engagement, research, and education programs designed to foster healthier populations, especially among vulnerable groups such as youth and the elderly.

The Community Health Organizer position focuses on advancing the Texas A&M Opioid Prevention for K-12 Students (TOPS) program, a critical initiative aimed at raising awareness and preventing opioid misuse among youth. This staff role involves administrative duties, community outreach, curriculum training, and program implementation to support opioid prevention efforts across multiple Texas locations including Amarillo, Tyler, San Angelo, and Austin. As a Community Health Organizer, the candidate will serve as a vital liaison between schools, community leaders, and other stakeholders to mobilize resources and coordinate effective health education campaigns. This role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to engage diverse populations, and a passion for public health advocacy.

Compensation for this grant-funded position is commensurate with education and experience. The role may require up to 50% or more travel and flexibility to work beyond normal office hours, including weekends. Candidates will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a dedicated Area Team, plan and execute community events, deliver culturally sensitive opioid prevention education, and contribute to detailed program reporting and evaluation. The Community Health Organizer will also assist in strategic planning and help build capacity within target communities, ensuring that opioid prevention education reaches those who need it most. Job Requirements

  • Ability to travel independently by driving or commercial airlines
  • This position is security sensitive
  • Compliance with state and federal laws, Texas A&M University policies and procedures
  • Ability to perform all tasks safely without injury
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% or more
  • Availability to work beyond normal office hours and weekends
  • Position contingent upon grant funding and satisfactory performance

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certified Community Health Worker (CHW) and/or Community Health Worker Instructor (CHWI) preferred
  • Experience providing CHW training sessions
  • Master's degree in public health or related field preferred
  • Experience in public/community relations or event planning
  • Fluent in English and Spanish (written and oral) preferred
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively
