Job Description
Harvesters - The Community Food Network is a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger and strengthening communities in Kansas and Missouri. With a strong commitment to partnership and collaboration, Harvesters serves as a crucial link between food donors, volunteers, and those in need. The organization operates a major hub known as the Kansas Distribution Center (KDC), which plays a vital role in storing, sorting, and distributing food to various partner agencies, food pantries, and meal providers across the region.
As a community-focused organization, Harvesters relies heavily on the engagement and coordination of volunteers to fulfill its mission. The Community Engagement Coordinator position at the Kansas Distribution Center is a key role responsible for managing volunteer activities both onsite and at offsite events. This position ensures that volunteers have a safe, productive, and meaningful experience every time they contribute their time and energy.
This role operates on a Tuesday through Saturday schedule and is integral to coordinating group reservations, leading volunteer orientations, and creating a welcoming environment where volunteers feel informed, confident, and connected to the purpose of the organization. The Community Engagement Coordinator works closely with multiple internal teams, including the Volunteer Engagement Center and the First Impressions Coordinator, to streamline volunteer check-ins, maintain front desk coverage, and provide continuous support during volunteer shifts.
In addition to onsite coordination, the role requires overseeing offsite food drives, managing logistics, scheduling volunteers, preparing materials, and ensuring smooth operations during packing events and community partnerships. The Coordinator represents Harvesters at community events, strengthening relationships with local organizations and helping to expand the network of support.
Beyond immediate volunteer engagement tasks, this position demands flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment. It involves handling complex scheduling and group logistics with precision while maintaining a positive, inclusive atmosphere. Physical activity is part of the job, including standing, walking, lifting, and the operation of equipment such as large cargo vans, demonstrating a practical hands-on aspect to the work.
Harvesters values professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality, reflecting their dedication to organizational excellence and trust. By integrating volunteer coordination with broader resource development goals, the Community Engagement Coordinator plays a foundational role in supporting the organization's efforts to eliminate hunger and foster community resilience.
