Job Description

The City of Richmond Police Department is a committed public safety organization dedicated to serving the diverse and dynamic community of Richmond, located in the Bay Area. As a vital municipal entity, the department provides law enforcement, fire, and emergency response services designed to enhance the safety and well-being of the community it serves. Recognized for its competitive Bay Area pay and strong retirement system through CalPERS, the department emphasizes a supportive team environment where personnel are supported and never alone during critical moments. The City of Richmond offers a range of employee benefits including city-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid vacation and sick leave, as well as tuition and professional development reimbursements to foster employee growth and well-being.

Within this context, the City of Richmond Police Department is currently seeking dependable and quick-thinking individuals for the position of Communications Dispatcher I. This is a full-time role featuring continuous recruitment, with monthly salary ranging from $6,257.62 to $7,606.18, equivalent to $91,274 annually. Communications Dispatchers serve as the crucial first point of contact during emergencies, coordinating timely and effective responses across various public safety departments including police and fire units. Dispatchers play a high-impact role requiring professionalism, calm under pressure, and sound judgment — all essential traits for managing emergency calls and providing reassurance that can save lives and protect property.

The role involves receiving and assessing both emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching appropriate units, and furnishing police officers with vital information such as warrants, registrations, and locations. Dispatchers operate an array of technical systems including Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems, radios, multi-line phones, and citywide cameras, and are also responsible for delivering emergency medical instructions when needed. Additionally, the position requires maintaining accurate logs and reports and coordinating mutual aid with partner agencies.

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet minimum qualifications including a typing speed of at least 30 net words per minute with no more than 15 errors, along with certification obtained within the past six months from a recognized public agency, school, training center, or employment agency. New hires must complete a POST-certified 120-hour Basic Dispatcher course within one year. Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain composure under high-stress situations are crucial, as is sound judgment combined with the ability to follow detailed instructions.

Applicants must also meet hiring standards including having no felony convictions, a drug-free record specific to certain substances within the past three years, and must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation that includes fingerprinting, polygraph, credit check, and drug screening. Respiratory protective equipment qualification and COVID-19 vaccination (for hires post-October 18, 2021, unless exemption approved) are also required.

Applicants can apply through the City of Richmond’s online portal, submitting required documentation such as a typing certificate or POST Dispatcher test score or current POST certificate. Following initial review, top candidates proceed through rigorous background reviews, polygraph, and medical examinations. Successful candidates are placed on an eligibility list valid for eight months. This role offers a rewarding career path with the opportunity to make a real difference by contributing to public safety and emergency response efforts in a vibrant community. Practical benefits and ongoing professional support enhance both job satisfaction and career longevity in this critical dispatch position.
