Job Description
City Year is a dynamic AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across various schools achieve academic success and personal growth. As part of AmeriCorps, City Year mobilizes teams of passionate young adults who are committed to supporting students, classrooms, and entire schools. Their mission is to ensure that students receive a high-quality education, empowering them with the skills and mindset necessary to thrive academically and socially, as well as contribute positively to their communities. City Year operates within diverse school environments and collaborates closely with teachers, administrators, and staff to address educational disparities and foster student achievement. The program emphasizes community engagement, leadership development, and holistic support for students.*
The role of a Student Success Coach and Mentor, as a City Year AmeriCorps member, is an entry-level, paid, full-time position designed for individuals passionate about making a tangible impact in education. This position focuses on coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and high school students to help them improve their academic performance, attendance, and positive behavior. Members work directly with students both one-on-one and in small groups, tailoring learning activities to meet individual literacy and math needs. They are also engaged in developing behavior management systems and promoting interpersonal skills through strategies such as reflection, practice, and repetition. This role offers a unique opportunity to join the frontline of educational support in schools, positively influencing student outcomes and school culture.
City Year AmeriCorps members receive 2 to 4 weeks of comprehensive training at the start of their service year to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge. Throughout the year, they collaborate closely with partner teachers and school staff, ensuring aligned efforts toward student success. Duties include data collection and analysis of student progress in City Year's student data system, as well as creating engaging and safe classroom environments. Additionally, members support whole-school initiatives by organizing and participating in extended-day programming, virtual learning sessions, extracurricular clubs, and leadership activities. Events celebrating student achievements in literacy, attendance, behavior, and other growth areas are also key parts of the role.
The position offers a rich benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance; mental health support through programs like Talkspace Therapy; a living stipend paid bi-weekly; workers’ compensation; relocation assistance; and access to career and university partnerships with scholarship opportunities. Members also receive uniform parts specific to City Year and AmeriCorps, along with eligibility for the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award and other federally issued benefits such as child care payment assistance, student loan forbearance, and eligibility for federal loan forgiveness programs. This role is ideal for motivated individuals aged 17-25 who hold at least a high school diploma or GED and have some college experience or a degree, and who want to build their skills, contribute meaningfully to communities, and develop professionally within an educational setting.
