Job Description
City Year is a notable AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students succeed academically and socially across various schools in the United States. As a nonprofit organization focused on education and youth development, City Year mobilizes teams of AmeriCorps members to act as mentors, role models, and tutors. The organization's commitment to supporting whole schools and classrooms aims to ensure that every student receives a high-quality education that prepares them for future challenges and contributions to their communities. City Year’s mission centers around closing the educational achievement gap and providing resources to students who might otherwise be underserved or at risk. This organization thrives on a collaborative approach, bringing together educators, families, and AmeriCorps members in a shared mission to elevate student success and foster positive developmental outcomes. Through its service programs, City Year has become a vital educational partner in many schools, facilitating improved academic performance and increased student engagement.
The City Year AmeriCorps Member role is a paid, full-time position offering a unique opportunity to support students in elementary, middle, and high schools. As an AmeriCorps member, you will engage directly with students to provide coaching and mentoring tailored to support academic success, improve attendance, and encourage positive behavior. This position involves working one-on-one or in small groups with identified students, as well as supporting whole-class instruction and school-wide initiatives. City Year provides comprehensive training lasting between two to four weeks at the beginning of the service term to ensure members are well-equipped for their responsibilities, making this role accessible even to those new to educational support roles. Throughout your service, you will collaborate closely with teachers and school staff to plan interventions, monitor student progress, and implement effective behavior management systems. Beyond academic support, you will also contribute to creating a safe, engaging, and healthy classroom environment alongside educators.
In addition to working within classrooms, City Year AmeriCorps members help facilitate extended day and virtual programming that includes academic interventions, homework help, student clubs, service-learning projects, and leadership development activities. Members also take part in organizing events that celebrate student achievements and growth in areas like math, literacy, attendance, and behavior, enriching the school community and fostering a positive culture. The role is both challenging and rewarding, providing members with invaluable experience in education, youth development, and community engagement. Besides developing professional skills, members benefit from a package including health, dental, and vision insurance; living stipends; mental health programs such as Talkspace Therapy; and relocation support if applicable. Furthermore, as a federally supported AmeriCorps program, members may access education awards, childcare benefits, loan forgiveness programs, and other financial resources designed to assist those serving in the position. Overall, joining City Year as an AmeriCorps member is a meaningful way to contribute to education equity while gaining real-world experience and personal growth opportunities.
