The Commis de Rang position on The World is a pivotal role within the food and beverage team. This role primarily supports the senior service staff in maintaining the highest levels of service within assigned stations in various dining settings, including restaurants, In-Residence Dining, special events, or beach BBQs. The Commis de Rang ensures that residents and guests consistently receive courteous, engaging, prompt, and efficient service. This role requires a hands-on approach to all aspects of restaurant operations, contributing to the seamless execution of service and enhancing the overall dining experience.

In this role, the Commis de Rang is responsible for assisting with the mise-en-place, preparing waiter stations, food pass areas, coffee stations, and buffets before service. They also support the Chef de Rang and Demi Chef de Rang with daily operations, including opening and closing the restaurant. A strong knowledge of the menu, daily specials, and the history of each restaurant is crucial to effectively communicate with guests and enhance their dining experience. The role demands attentiveness in taking orders for in-residence dining and participating actively during service under the direction of senior service staff.

The Commis de Rang also plays a vital part in resident and guest services, aiming to exceed expectations by delivering personalized service in line with Leading Quality Assurance (LQA) standards. Continuous participation in training sessions ensures that the service levels remain exemplary and in line with company standards. Beyond the restaurant, this role involves supporting various activities such as ship tours, Zodiac landings, marina days, and expeditions, enhancing guest interactions and contributing to the overall onboard experience.

Working conditions for this position require physical endurance and flexibility, including the ability to work seven days a week for extended periods across different shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Crew members must be capable of standing and walking long distances on the ship, performing repetitive motions, and lifting up to 23 kilograms. Additionally, all crew must be able to engage fully in emergency life-saving procedures, requiring full use of arms and legs, as well as strong visual, verbal, and hearing abilities. The ability to live harmoniously in close quarters and adapt to varying temperature conditions is essential.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to work seven days a week for extended periods including day or night shifts, weekends and holidays
  • Physical ability to stand, walk long distances, bend, climb, go up and down stairs, and lift up to 23 kilograms
  • Capability to participate in emergency life-saving procedures and drills
  • Full use of arms and legs, and full visual, verbal and hearing abilities for emergency instructions
  • Ability to work in varying temperature conditions indoors and outdoors
  • Certification to pass STCW safety course
  • Ability to live harmoniously in close quarters

Job Qualifications

  • Able to read, write and speak fluently in English
  • Diploma in Hotel Management is preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant experience on a luxury cruise ship, private country club or similar luxury hotel or resort
  • Knowledge of an additional language such as German, French, Italian, or Spanish is preferred

Job Duties

  • Ensure mise-en-place of waiter stations, food pass area, coffee stations, buffets are ready before service
  • Assist Chef de Rang and Demi Chef de Rang in operations and restaurant opening and closing duties
  • Participate in daily special briefings and take notes to enhance food knowledge
  • Remain knowledgeable of all restaurant menus, preparations, and their history
  • Take orders in In-Residence dining
  • Serve water and bread and assist in serving and clearing dishes as instructed by senior staff
  • Complete side duties as assigned by Restaurant Management
