Job Description
Sobremesa is a distinguished hospitality establishment located in Savannah, GA, known for its unique fusion of a wine bar and a full-scale restaurant that revolves around a rich culinary heritage and an innovative beverage program. Founded with a passion to create memorable guest experiences, Sobremesa has steadily evolved since its inception, thanks to the visionary partnership between Ryan Ribeiro and Jason Restivo. Ryan, a loyal patron and local enthusiast of Atlantic cuisine, and Jason, an experienced restaurateur with a celebrated history in Savannah’s dining scene, have combined their talents to create a venue that honors tradition while embracing modern culinary techniques and service excellence.
Sobremesa’s identity is deeply rooted in the concept of 'sobremesa' itself, a Portuguese term that encapsulates the heartfelt moments shared around the table, savoring food and creating lasting memories. This ethos is reflected throughout the restaurant, from its ever-changing small plates and a carefully curated wine list to its innovative cocktail program that complements the culinary offerings. The restaurant prides itself on its commitment to quality, service, and an inviting atmosphere that elevates every guest’s experience.
The role of Commis Chef at Sobremesa offers a unique and dynamic opportunity to be part of an award-winning kitchen environment. As a full-time, on-site position, the Commis Chef will actively participate in daily kitchen operations under the guidance of Chef de Cuisine Joshua Miller, who brings a wealth of experience from prestigious culinary establishments such as Husk and The Brice Hotel. Chef Miller’s diverse culinary background, combining Southern comfort, Caribbean influences, and European culinary traditions, inspires a creative yet approachable menu that challenges and nurtures the skills of kitchen staff.
The Commis Chef position is not merely about food preparation; it is a comprehensive training experience designed for ambitious culinary professionals eager to advance their career. This position entails hands-on responsibilities like prepping, cooking, and plating food, while also managing kitchen hygiene, safety standards, and inventory control. Moreover, the role provides invaluable exposure to culinary management—including menu development, food cost analysis, ordering procedures, and private event execution—equipping the candidate with essential managerial skills.
Working at Sobremesa means being part of a fast-paced yet intimate culinary team focused on excellence and collaboration. Candidates will benefit from a structured training program that covers ServSafe, OSHA, HAACP standards, fermentation techniques, gastronomy, and efficient kitchen documentation practices. The restaurant maintains a balanced work schedule with reasonable shift durations and no late nights, fostering a healthy work-life balance. Compensation ranges from $16 to $21 per hour, with flexible scheduling, paid training, and employee benefits kicking in after a 90-day probationary period.
Sobremesa also fosters an inclusive work environment, welcoming applicants with diverse backgrounds and encouraging those with a criminal record to apply. This role is perfect for chefs passionate about food, eager to develop their knife skills, and ready to contribute creatively in a supportive, evolving kitchen. Potential candidates who thrive under pressure, embrace teamwork, and seek continuous learning will find Sobremesa's Commis Chef role to be an inspiring career step.
