Job Description
Merlin Entertainments operates LEGOLAND Discovery Centers, which are renowned indoor family entertainment destinations featuring LEGO-themed rides, interactive play zones, and creative workshops. The LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City is part of this global chain and offers an immersive, playful environment where families can explore and enjoy activities centered around the LEGO brand. Merlin Entertainments is dedicated to creating magical experiences that encourage creativity, imagination, and joyful moments for guests of all ages. As a leader in the leisure and attractions sector, Merlin focuses on delivering excellent guest experiences, maintaining high operational standards, and fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace where every employee feels valued and empowered. The company champions a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and innovation, ensuring that each location not only attracts visitors but also cultivates memorable experiences rooted in fun and engagement.
The role of Commercial Manager at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City is vital to the smooth and profitable operation of the facility's Retail, Food & Beverage, and Admissions departments. This position involves overseeing commercial strategies and operations with the aim of delivering exceptional guest service while achieving strong financial results. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Commercial Manager leads a high-performing team responsible for maximizing revenue opportunities and driving commercial success by aligning with The LEGO Group’s core values of fun, creativity, inclusivity, and authenticity. The ideal candidate will possess a keen commercial acumen combined with excellent leadership abilities, as well as the ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced leisure environment.
Core responsibilities include ensuring that the Retail, Food & Beverage, and Admissions teams deliver world-class guest experiences that surpass key performance indicators such as per-capita spend, transaction values, and mystery visit scores. The Commercial Manager also spearheads merchandising and menu strategies, pricing, promotional activities, and peak period optimizations to maximize revenue generation. Additionally, the role demands hands-on leadership in hiring, training, and developing staff, fostering an energized and inclusive workplace culture where employees are motivated and accountable.
Operational oversight forms a significant part of the role, including inventory management, waste control, loss prevention, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and regulatory standards. The Commercial Manager serves as a visible, hands-on leader who actively participates in performance management, operational troubleshooting as Duty Manager when needed, and collaborates closely with senior leadership to plan budgets and labor resources effectively.
Candidates must bring at least three years of management experience in retail, food and beverage, admissions or hospitality within a high-volume attraction or leisure context. They should be commercially savvy, with a track record of delivering on revenue and margin targets and strong experience in team leadership and development. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and proficiency in operational systems and Microsoft Office tools are essential. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and peak periods, as well as the ability to meet the physical demands of the role, are imperative.
Merlin Entertainments offers competitive pay, flexible working hours, generous employee discounts including 30% off retail, the Merlin Magic Pass granting free admission to LEGOLAND Discovery Centers, and competitive 401K benefits. The company prides itself on fostering a fun and supportive working environment where diversity and inclusion are core values. Joining the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City team means being part of an innovative and guest-focused brand dedicated to bringing creativity and happiness to families and communities alike.
