The Carpenter position offers a unique seasonal contract opportunity to contribute to vital maintenance and construction projects within the USAP. In this role, the Carpenter performs a range of skilled tasks including rough framing, finish carpentry, and construction duties, often in harsh and remote Antarctic conditions. Operating under the supervision of a Carpenter Foreman, Project Manager Coordinator, or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, the Carpenter's responsibilities are tailored based on individual expertise and the dynamic needs of the Antarctic mission.
This full-time contract role pays approximately $1,339.80 per week and demands a high level of physical endurance and adaptability. Candidates must be willing and able to deploy for extended periods in Antarctica, participating in construction and maintenance activities vital to the safety and functionality of research stations and field facilities. The role also emphasizes teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving in a challenging, often unpredictable environment where safety and procedural compliance are paramount.
The Carpenter will handle rough framing and finish carpentry tasks utilizing a broad array of materials and tools. Work assignments can range from construction in undeveloped and remote areas subject to extreme cold and high winds, to coordinating material usage and maintaining accurate inventory records. The role requires heavy physical activity such as lifting, hauling, digging, and working outdoors often under demanding weather conditions. Carpenters will also respond to emergency service calls as needed, maintain thorough documentation of tasks and materials, and advise supervisors on progress and resource requirements.
Successful candidates must be able to read design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams to complete their work effectively. They must follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest improvements, and help create new procedures when necessary. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- minimum four years of documented carpentry experience
- ability to read and interpret design drawings and specifications
- prior computer experience required
- willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
- successful completion of NSF-required medical and dental examinations
- successful completion of drug screening and background checks including Federal Background Check
- must be able to lift and move items up to the safety regulation maximum
- able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold
- valid US driver’s license
- US citizenship required for facility credentials and authorization
- compliance with ASC environmental, safety, and health policies
- participation in community programs and safety objectives
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- minimum four years of documented experience in most phases of the carpentry trade, including rough framing and finish carpentry
- ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagrams
- possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications
- possess the competencies, willingness and ability to perform the duties of position
- wilderness first responder, wilderness first aid, or basic to advanced first aid training (McMurdo Summer only) preferred
- experience accomplishing metal stud framing preferred
- experience hanging and finishing drywall preferred
- experience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities preferred
- experience working in remote locations or extreme environments preferred
- proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred
Job Duties
- Perform rough framing and finish carpentry utilizing a variety of materials and tools
