Rice University, located on a sprawling 300-acre tree-lined campus in Houston, Texas, stands out as one of the nation's top 20 universities according to U.S. News & World Report. This prestigious institution prides itself upon a close-knit academic community supported by a striking 6-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. With a vibrant residential college system, Rice delivers an enriching environment that nurtures students intellectually, emotionally, and culturally through a diverse range of social events, intramural sports, theater productions, lecture series, courses, and active student government. The university's commitment to fostering diverse, tight-knit communities translates into high rankings for quality of life and value among private universities, further emphasizing its dedication to holistic excellence. At Rice, faculty, staff, and students uphold shared values encapsulated by the acronym RICE—Responsibility, Integrity, Community, and Excellence—that guide behavior and decision-making, further defining the welcoming and supportive culture of this educational institution.
The Cohen House Steward position at Rice University's Faculty Club represents a vital role within the Rice Hospitality team, offering essential support in maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of this prestigious facility. This role involves routine and event-driven housekeeping and stewarding duties, including the cleaning of offices, restrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, and public areas to ensure a sanitary and guest-ready environment. The Steward aids in dishwashing, trash and linen removal, floor care, and general organization both in front-of-house and back-of-house settings. Additionally, the Steward plays an instrumental part in bussing tables during lunch service, assisting with room flips for banquets, and supporting setup and breakdown during events.
The role requires close collaboration with the culinary team, banquet captains, and event staff to uphold the high standards Rice Hospitality is known for. Besides routine duties, the Steward may be responsible for unlocking and securing the building, reporting maintenance issues, and performing special custodial tasks. This essential role is classified as critical during campus emergencies, necessitating attendance and service under the direction of the Crisis Management Team.
Ideal candidates bring at least one year of experience in custodial, stewarding, or commercial kitchen environments, thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic hospitality setting with shifting priorities, and demonstrate reliable attention to detail, dependability, and teamwork. The position is exclusively onsite at Cohen House, with a work schedule primarily Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., although evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required for event support. The role demands moderate to heavy physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds and the ability to perform repetitive motion tasks. The hourly wage for this Non-Exempt position ranges from $18.00 to $20.00 with eligibility for overtime under FLSA guidelines. Overall, this opportunity offers a rewarding way to contribute meaningfully to the daily operations of a prestigious university hospitality environment while embodying the core values Rice holds dear.
